Ive lost count of the amount of times ive stood and watched a farmer working his Collie, especially on the hills. The way they cover the ground, tirelessly for hours at a time, working on minimal commands

I worked as a hill shepherd for many years when I was a youngster...I worked sheep and cattle with my collies and also hunted them alongside my lurchers and terriers...and lamped rabbits with them too

Personaly,..   I think you ether get on with herding dogs,.or you don't...

There's a few collies about already working bunnys and other game they don't suit everybody but no dog does. Its one of these dogs id use if I was ever going to go down that route....

MY MATE WHO DID HAVE THIS HUNTING COLLIE,,ADD A GUTT FULL OF INJURYS WITH LURCHERS SO HE TOOK TO A COLLIE TREATED LIKE A LURCHER,, AND HIT BECOME 1,,,HAS MUCH HAS IT CUD BE,,,HE GOT A PUP 2 WEEKS A GO PEDI A MILE LONG, NO HISTORY OF BEING IN THE HILLS ROUNDING SHEEP,,, I WILL KEEP YOU AN UP DATE ON IT,,,,

WE SEEM TO BE GOING OFF THE SUBJECT,FROM WHAT IVE SEEN OF SHEPARD,S WHO TRAIN COLLIES A COLLIE WHATS FULL ON AND KEAN, HIS A BAD COLLIE,THEY LIKE A COLLIE TO BE LAYED BACK VERY STEADY, AND WAIT FOR COMANDS, IT MAKES LIFE EASY FOR THEM WHY SHUD YOU WANT THAT TYPE IN YOUR LURCHER, I WUD SOONER HAVE A COLLIE WHAT DONT MAKE THE GRADE OF A SHEEP DOG, AND WHAT HIS A LITTLE FULL ON,,MAY,BE THE GOOD COLLIES WHAT WE GO ON ABOUT,THE[ PERFECT COLLIE FOR THE SHEPARD] MAY NOT BE THE PERFECT DOG FOR US LURCHER LADS WHO WANT TO KILL NUMBERS, IFF IT COME TO BREEDING A COLLIE I WUD GO TO A COLLIE WHATS BIN IN THE HUNTING GAME LIKE 1 OR 2 WHATS POSTED ON THIS TOPIC,,,

I have a collie here similar to describe jim. Sturdy, very driven. Works stock of all types and not frightened to grab hold. Works with the lurchers and deals with vermin around the farm. The downfall is temperament. Strung out! Got mithered into using him at stud to a tidy grew type against my better judgment. To pups were good solid graft dogs, but their temperament was not what you would want to live or work with. Never again

I agree with Borderscot. A determined strong willed hill collie. proven mentally and physically

BORDER SAID ON HIS POST HE WUD GO FOR THE COLLIE, THE FARMERS WAS HAVEING PROBLEMS WITH,,A ROGUE COLLIE GOING OFF HUNTING DEER,, AND THATS THE TYPE I WUD GO FOR, HAS WELL,,

Oh he's a rogue alright! ;)

I feel tired.

FEEL FREE TO PUT SOME POSTS UP OF YOUR WINTER TRIPS OUT, THAT WILL KEEP YOU AWAKE,,,LOL
I did in the winter, why is it always about the collie, the working ability of the bull or deerhound or saluki or bedlington or whatever never seems to require the same level of scrutiny?

:icon_eek: It's a thread started by someone with an obvious knowledge of collies and collie xs and most of the posters who have had something worthwhile to add are kinda like minded...none of the saluki, bull or deerhound lads have contributed...sure there's been threads "scrutinizing" these types in the past...just a discussion...that's all...

I think the collie crosses are pretty damn neat dogs. If I had to take one I would most definately take one over the deerhound, sazuki, whippet, beddy types. I dont wanna start any arguement cuz this is a good thread but thats just the way I see it. I actually believe in the collie cross especially if they are linebred lamping types.

Because unlike the other pure breds. Only the colie can stand up to the scrutiny. I have collies and use them but I wouldn't want a pup off one of them. Well not a halfx lurcher anyways as id rather go to a well proven colliex line than the pure. But if I did want a halfx then a hunting collie used and proved on game is the only way id go

As Sock said herding is just hunting in a subliminal sense...hunting without the 'end game' so to speak...seen collies take it too far...the killing instinct is just simmering below the surface and the results have been catastrophic...if I had time I would be happy to bring on a collie dog pup and hunt it like a lurcher...I have done it in the past...with success...the problem could easily lie in the fact that if it don't look like a greyhound lots of folk just ain't interested...good thread this Jim...

That litter down here, being the perfect example!
