low plains drifter 10,724
there is some land near me where i have the odd walk now and then, part of an estate manged by the national trust and grazed by sheep and cattle from local farms. never in almost 20 years have i seen a hare there, and only the occasional rabbit, but i found this sign up today which i found a bit annoying. for a start, i had a word with one of the graziers who i know, and he said there had been a couple of local boys loooking for rabbits with the lamp one evening and a passer-by had called the police, certainly no hare coursing going on. secondly the idea of putting wires in the grass is a new one on me, is this supposed to injure the dogs, in which case is it perhaps cruelty itself? no different to illegal trapping is it? and thirdly, what other crimes can you think of where signs are put up "just in case"? do you get signs in the street saying "danger of muggers", or stuff like that? just seems like we are constantly being dragged into the public domain, almost trying to get the general public to report any kind of running dog activity, legal or not. tar em all with the same brush! Dog wires are designed so that a hare can safely run under them, but a dog gets the cartoon piano wire treatment,us harmless dog folk are just an easy target, and a money maker for the courts 1 Quote Link to post
Dubba 72
To be honest I don't see the problem unless your looking at running your dog there without permission. At least they've put a sign up warning you that if you run your dog here it might get smashed up. It may seem stupid but there may be things going on you don't know about. I've known plenty of landowners get pissed of at people running that they've left chain harrows etc in long grass to deliberately mess dogs up. At least there kind of saying you poach here prepare for a vets bill. Quote Link to post

C Hall 552
Correct me if I am wrong but if there is anything remotely illegal about that sign should the countryside alliance not take it up? they have had enough donations given to them by honest lurcher folk who go about working there dogs legally Even suggesting wires are strung out intentionally to harm dogs is surely wrong? pip1968 2,490
say you had permision in the next field and your dog chases a rabbit through the hedge and hit a wire strung out in that field surely you would have a case against who ever put the wires down Quote Link to post
