Good question! Whats a Lakeland? Is it the type of terrier bred and shown ( not worked) by Gary Middleton? Or is it the type of terrier I presently own that I call fell types, note the word "types" as to me they are not lakelands, but others may call them Lakeland types. In their distant ancestory there is staffordshire bull terrier. Some dogs throw rough, wire, smooth coated, some are black, chocolate, red, sandy coloured (very rare black and tan) Some people call all coloured terriers Lakelands, some call them patterdales, some call them coloured terriers. For this reason I cannot answer your question direct, however, to broaden your question do I feel there are some strains of Lakelands (Middleton looking types) that I do not rate as workers?My answer would be yes to the vast majority I have seen over the past 25 years, however, I am certainly not knocking all Lakelands as I have seen some very good so called Lakelands. Again what do we class as a worker? My saying, as previously said is "theres work and theres work", regular work, tested work not 6 digs a season (pre ban) The feeling I get it seems as though any black and tan type terrier is called a lakeland, agree?

 

There are strains, what ever you chose to call them, that have been ruined and this ruination cannot be undone, if you put lead in to gold you will never get pure gold back. Teriermen that have been around for the past 20 years are all fully aware of the certain individuals who have ruined some working terrier lines, these have gone, history, you can never get it back. Again this can be a trciky answer and 1 I may leave my self open to! How many pure lines are there in any of todays working terrier breeds? Mine, what ever you call them (cross breds!) are certainly not line bred as I went for a out cross some 11 years ago ( so have I ruined them?) No, I didnt sday I had a strain, I have not ruined the working qualities, in facct what I strive for is to perfect, maintain and preserve the working qualities. .

 

On the knowledge I have, or lack of! I would suggest that most terriermen who are worthy of the name can trace their terriers ancestory back a fair way back, no matter what the breed. But to me there is no purpose of tracing any pedigree if the pedigree is made up of inferior blood. We all have failures, we will have all at one point done a mating and the outcome has been poor and set you back, this is part of the perfection process. It is at this point when you have bred a failure what action you take, this is the difference between a true terrierman/woman and a phoney, do you keep it and lie, do you continue to breed from it and hope top get Gold or do you find it a pet home, to put is mildly!

Hi all!

I’m Swedish hunter who is quite new to working terriers and digging, this is just my second season. I currently have a Border along with me to hunt foxes and badgers here in Sweden. As I really enjoy this form of hunting I’m planning to buy additional one or two Border Terriers. Does anybody on this forum have any advice for me regarding where to buy a Border with good working lines in the UK?

We do have some working Borders here in Sweden but no one pay any interest in introducing “new†working lines from the UK, i.e. most of them are as you all know show dogs and/or pets. Thanks in advance!
