Today when I returned from shopping (please don’t ask why), a card from the postman informing me to collect a parcel from my local depot was in the letter box. The only parcel I am expecting is from Bond Gun Accessories Ltd; that will hopefully contain a new .177 barrel to replace the .22 barrel on my TX200HC.

Not being one to sit around twiddling my thumbs, I thought it would be a good idea to prepare my TX200HC in anticipation of collecting the parcel on Friday morning that contains my new .177 barrel (I hope) so I may fit it as soon as it is in my possession.

Removed the scope, removed the stock, removed the cocking arm, removed the trigger assembly, removed the piston assembly, removed the moderator insert and the cocking arm holder off the shroud, now to remove the barrel; after establishing it was a 17mm nut retaining the barrel by loosely trying sockets through the breech, I next found an extension bar long enough to fit through the cylinder assembly to reach the barrel nut. After a few grunts and groans and failed attempts to loosen the nut, I roped in my son to help and we eventually managed to release and remove the retaining nut. The barrel was still firmly in place and refused to withdraw from the cylinder assembly. A quick search on the internet revealed the barrel has Loctite adhesive applied when assembled. Searching through my kit I found the appropriate tools to cope with the extraction, a heavy hammer and soft faced drift. After a little sweat and a few choice swear words we managed to break the Loctite grip and remove the barrel.

While everything was in bits I decided to clean and polish to a mirror finish the internal compression tube, the loose spring guide and inner tube and spring guide of the piston assembly, I also polished the cylinder assembly to aid the cocking cycle. Everything was thoroughly cleaned, dried and coated with a thin application of WD40 and been left overnight in preparation for greasing (Bisley Gun Grease) as necessary.

All this on a preconception the parcel contains the parts from Bond Gun Accessories Ltd. If it’s not what I am expecting I will probably throw a wobbly and sulk for the rest of the day.

Interesting stuff and i hope you get your barrel in the morning, if it was me it might turn into a whole weekend of sulking and grumping

Well it did, and I have; now I’ve just got to wait for the loctite to set properly and I can try it out.

I am very happy with the results so far and pleased I decided to change the barrel to .177; the action remained unchanged other than a polish and re-grease. Although I have only fired about 150 pellets through the new barrel at the moment the chrono reading has stabilised at around 710fps (9.45ftlb). I have eliminated AA Field and Accupell for the time being as it currently prefers 4.53 JSB’s, when it is fully settled in I will test a variety of pellets in earnest. Only two negatives at the moment, it’s quite a bit louder and a little harsher that it was as a .22, but I expected that anyway.

Indeed Steve that spring has to work harder so you will feel a difference mate.

 

Nicely done changing it over sounds like you did a good job.
