This shooting game,its not just aim and fire and hit a match stick at 30 yrs

my prosport has changed after 1000 rounds it became harsh and not consistent,so washed lubed and carefully selected by eye the best pellets (AA field 4.51),the accuraccy improved but not back to how it was when i got it,also after putting to one side the duff pellets ie bent skirts i was horriified to see 30 or so,not acceptable for pellets costing £9.35

RWS superfield are next on the list for trying.theres some good right ups on the net,

iam also thinking i may need to clean my barrel,the first 1000 pellets werent washed or lubed and iam thinking there may be some clag that needs removing,

can i use 7.9 grain pellets in my prosport without damaging the piston,ive read about piston bounce when light pellets are used,or is this another internet myth

There has been a marked decline in standards of both pellet and gun manufacture Sparky. It's not unusual to find a number of damaged pellets among the most expensive brands nowadays.

 

I can recommend Superfields though. Not found any damaged ones in the tins I have.

 

But in your post you say your Pro Sport has become harsh and not so consistent after 1.000 rounds through it. Sounds like you rifle has developed an internal fault mate; ammo alone will not cause harsher firing cycles. That sounds like there's a fault with the spring or seals or piston head. Inconsistencies at the target are often caused by erratic charges of air behind the pellet, down the barrel.

 

I've heard of this phenomina called 'piston bounce'. Apparently, this occurs with heavy pellets not clearing the breach quickly enough on firing causing a vacuum in the breech that cushions against the piston head, causing it to effectively bounce. But I cannot see such a massive force generated by the spring being enough to cause this to happen.

 

My friend Andy here thinks it's a bit of a myth. He's a very experienced and knowledgeable gunsmith when it comes to spring rifles. And he finds there's nothing to honestly substantiate the claim.

 

And from my own experience of shooting spring rifles for past 43 years, it's not something I have experienced before.

Simon,i dont know you but strangly i trust your words,i didnt know how bad my rifle had got until i started washing and lubing my pellets,its as smooth as silk now,at around 800 pellets through it i ran it over the chrono and with AA field 4.51 its extreme spread was only 5 fps across 20 shots,iam pretty sure its mechanically sound,in saying that iam off down the gun shop saturday for some pellets,i may let him try the rifle see what he thinks,

iam looking to clean the barrel but dont know the best way to do it

its difficult to describe whats happening,the rifle has smoothed out nicely,no mechanical twangs,noises etc,er iam not making myself clear really,lubing my pellets has smoothed the rifle if that makes sense,thats [BANNED TEXT] makes me think i need to clean the barrel,any way ill see how the rws group like

Hi guys.

Here's a thing, i recently refurbed an which shot RWS superfields quite well not brilliantly but not bad which i thought at the time would do as i get them for a fiver a tin.

At the weekend i cleaned the barrel as its an old gun and to be honest it looked filthy up the bore.

I used propriety cleaner patches and finished of with a tiny squirt of wd40 that i then cleaned out with patches, looking up the bore showed a locely mirror shine with no blemishes.

Set up a target on Monday night @ 30 yrds and the best i could achieve was a crap group of 3 inches.

I'm an average shot but even this was rediculous.

I read that Mawders had success cleaning his and i thought yep i'll give this a go, so i spent all of last night washing, weighing and sorting out superfields.

To my dismay they were grouping around the same again tonight and they are the only pellets i have at the moment apart from about a hundred H&N FTTin a little plastic box which had been rattling around in the landy for the best part of a year all dull and with the odd damaged one due to my neglect of them.

Oh well i thought i'll give them a go not thinking for a minute that any good would come.

1st shot landed 2" low and 1" to the right.

2nd 3rd 4th and 5th manky old pellets landed in a neat little group easily buried with a 5p.

JOY!!

Double the price but this old loves them, yet my FAC which is now doing sub 12 loved the superfields and hopefully still does, time to try them soon.

my 177 prosport loves daystate li's ! but the rifle is very hold sensitive, if i am not consistent neither are my groups. its v-mached.

Yeah ill agree with you on washing,weighing and lubing,it did stop the daft flyers and did make the rifle smoother to shoot

Fry,i think my prosport is hold sensitive,every now and then ill put 10 shots under a 5p at 25m,but i carnt work out what i do different when the group opens out to an inch and half

i reckon its the hold on the front to far down it goes to pot! i find holding it closer to the trigger is best! no bloody idea why its just cusit is ha ha

before i got my prosport i was intending to get a tx200hc,i had hold of a tx the other day and found it much steadier,wonder if the extra muzzle weight helps,also found i could stand and hold aim with the tx,my prosport is to heavy to free stand shoot

i only hunt i take the odd kneeler but am more confident lying down with me hand rested on a some thing. i dont really stalk i am more your lying down can of cider wait em out with the dog type of guy! (old an lazy) leave the standing shots to the young pros an ex military types. ha ha

Hi Nick.

Ask your gunsmith to give your Pro Sport a thorough internal service check and a barrel scrub. If you are not certain what you are doing mate, you can do real damage to the crown and we really don't want that one causing problems.

 

At least with your rifle sound as a pound internally, the pellet problems can be easily addressed.

 

I'm sure there is a solution just at hand for your pro Sport
