Guest joe ox
its a known fact that hares feed at night! they rest in woods and in there forms through the day...and after dusk they all come out to feed , thats why you see 10x more lamping than through the day ... i mean common sense says they come out to feed not get run after dusk! i think they are easier at night cos they cant make there runs the same and tend to stay in the same field... i got a mate whos 1st x bull x grey kill loads at night but daytime lucky if they put 1-2 bends in You think there easier to kill but openly admit that you dont lamp but your mate does! When you have lamped for a full season 3 or 4 nights a week I will look forward to reading your opinion. Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
[ J Darcy seems to disagree that hares are night time feeders. Erm.....where did i say that? I think after studying our quarry species in detail for many years i would know... my opinions...hares feed on vegetation during the night. They also feed during the day, but its at night when they really let their hair down(no pun). during the day, whilst the hare is sat in her seat she will eat her own excrement, these are not the usual "hard" pellets, but much softer ones. This is so the hare (and rabbit) gets as much nutrients from their foodstuff as possible. likewise, many of the hares caught by day will have soft pellets in their gut, whilst those at night will often have hard pellets in their gut. Joe Ox, i have never disagreed that hares were night time feeders, they are. and , of course hares are easier by lamplight... like all quarry dazzled, the dog has the upper hand. good hunting to all sportsmen....JD Quote Link to post

You did say "I beg to differ" when snoopdog challenged you about saying hares feed during the day? Hares dont hang around to be dazzled around here maybe early on in the season the stupid ones do but its starting to be there instinct to fear the lamp. Does that qualify you to give a educated opinion on lamping anything especially hares? What dogs are you running now? Quote Link to post

Does that qualify you to give a educated opinion on lamping anything especially hares? What dogs are you running now? yes because i know loads of lads that lamp hares cos there dogs cant do them daytime , but they mainly do rabbits and fox, cos hares are too hard for them, and they fully admit that they cant catch them daytime with there dogs. i only took my bitch once and found it was far too easy for her on the hares, it was almost cruel it was that easy...the other time i went i just spectated and ive coursed since i was a boy same as my father and grandfather, they coursed all there lives, i keep saluki crosses and will never have anything that doesnt have saluki in it , and my dogs are of generations of good hare coursing saluki crosses i know a good hare dog when i see one and good dog men dont run there dogs on the lamp, i persoally know some of the best dog men in the country that are well known ...not one of them lamp with there dogs Edited August 18, 2007 by tyson Quote Link to post
