M4yge 7
Hi timskie I have a Hawke sidewinder tac 30 and its a pretty good bit of gear. I also have a Falcon Menace FFP which I use on a hunting set up. Because its First Focal Plain the reticle changes size as you zoom in and out so you don't need to worry about adjusting your aim point for different magnifications. Not everyone likes them but it works for me! Best bet is to go and try a load as your eye might prefer one over another. Quote Link to post
timskie 1
Hi m4yge thanks for replying. Just a quick one why is it that when you alter the magnification in and out the pellet hits a different mark? It's kinda hard to put into words. Quote Link to post
M4yge 7
I'm not sure the exact science of it all (am sure someone will be along to correct me!) but this is how I think it is.... Say you zeroed your Hawke sidewinder 6.5-20 at 25yds at a magnification of 20X and at a 35yds target you need to hold over 1 mil dot. If you stayed at 35yds but decreased the magnification to 12X you would need to give it less than 1 mil dot of hold over. As I understand it, the aim points are only "true" at the magnification at which you zeroed the gun. Therefor, if you're out hunting and zoom out to 6X to take in a wider field of view, you need to return to the same magnification you zeroed at to take the shot or your aim points will not be true.Whereas with a FFP scope, the reticle a actually "grow" and "shrink" as you zoom in and out. Easiest way to show this is by having a play about with the Hawke chair gun software. Not sure if all that makes sense mate, this sort of thing is not my forte! If anyone else can explain that it but better it would be great. As I say, I'm no expert!!! Quote Link to post

AR177 588
Hi m4yge thanks for replying. Just a quick one why is it that when you alter the magnification in and out the pellet hits a different mark? It's kinda hard to put into words. Its because hawke's are second focal plane scopes and why they are only true mil dot at either 10x or 20x depending on the model your best of having a look at youtube on the first vs second focal plane stuff they explain it much better you can splash out on a first focal plane scope which will be a true mil dot at any magnification Edited June 13, 2013 by AR177 Quote Link to post
