My digging bitch is 20Ib when fit she almost 15inches to the shoulder and is considered by most to be too big,old time diggers about here where always digging 15Ib terriers at about 12inches to the shoulder against big quarry years ago these dogs all worked well and had no bother holding game.

The idea of monsters needed to hold game is a new one and a dog that can t move or can t hold the game in the pocket without its size is lacking elsewhere,i had a 10Ib 10 inch lakey russel which held game as well as any others of superior size.

Anyone with any digging experience knows that if game want to move he ll move ,unless you are breeding big dogs to stuff the exit ,not by working it but by simply not being able to move. This is not the work of a terrier, his job is simply to stop the game from moving by working it nipping barking and gripping and in my experience and that of mates who have much more experience than me no matter how strong the dog is he ll not be able to hold game in that frame of mind.

Ps just to add ,thats if we re all being honest here

i think some smaller dogs can work the game better in confined spaces, the bigger dogs can hold them better,it's just a matter of what you've got at the time, but i would never look at a terrier and say it can't

do a job, every terrier is unique,it's then a matter of horses for courses,a terrier is useful if the

owner finds it so,

Higgins.

Hello All, especially Woody& Ozty! I do not have a chip on my shoulder, far from it. For your info I breed and work Fells, I do not show and havent done so for over 15 years, I am not against shows just some, not all, the exhibitors. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Re my comments re NOT ENOUGH BONE OR MUSCLE TO THEM, IF YOUR IN TO DIGGING GET RID seems to have been misunderstood, it is hard to judge by a photo the size of a terrier and the definition of muscle etc, There is working and there is working, to me, by the photo image, the comments I made were certtainly not show related, any one who knows me will verify that. To me a terrier requires weight behind it, not fat but strength and weight in muscle, well boned to take and absorb knocks, strong neck to enable it to hold and if need be have the strenght to draw its quarry if further digging cannot be done. A strong head and good nose/snout with good jaw muscles, after all this is the area that will be taking the knocks and once this area becomes unworkable, your terrier is finished. Yes the saying is "if it cannot get it cannot do", perfect saying, however, what about this saying, "it can get and cannot do". Working terriers is very much like being a handy man, you need a box of spanners to be a decent handy man for the various work you carry out. It is no good having a 1 size fits all approach attitude to the size of your terrier. I have several terriers all of various sizes, however, my smallest is 14 inches and is a pup (12 months) I prefer a minimum height of 15 inches in height and in weight, (I do not weigh my dogs) I would imagine around 22lb to 27lb, my oldest terrier who has been retired for some time stood at 16/17inches and weighed around 30lb fit (too big? )but will I write her off over an inch, no dont think so, she will, if she works, shine in some places and will look mediocre in other places because of the size of tubes etc.

At the end of the day you feed your dogs, you know what is required from them (or do you?) and the comments were asked about what do you think about my pup. He/she may develop, as afar as I can see the terrier, in shape, would not be suitable/or prefered by me, horses for courses, my opinion, not knocking you.

CANNOT PUT PHOTOS UP OF MY TERRERS, they are that ugly they broke my camera!

Good luck, and good digging

One of the best terriers I've seen in a good number of years is about 12/13lbs soaking wet. Taffy owns her now and she is something else. Sometimes it's not all about the size in the dog....sometimes it's all about the grunt and the brains rather than the bulk
