Nik_B 3,790
Last night I was having a few beers and had put three of them in the freezer to get them cold quicker. Went down stairs for a smoke and whilst in the kitchen remembered they were in the freezer so took them out, tipping them on their sides I could tell that they weren't frozen but very cold. I congratulated myself over getting there in the nick of time and decided to open one, there was a tiny trace of ice but nothing serious so I left it on the side and went out for my fag. When I came back in the whole thing had iced up and beer had spilled out of the top of the bottle on to the worktops. There was a frozen froth blocking the neck of the bottle so I couldn't even drink what was in it After I cleared up the mess I set to defrosting the remains under the tap and tried to suck out what was left of the unfrozen beer but it got me thinking. What caused that to happen? It was liquid when it came out of the freezer but after the top came off it turned to ice. I have two theories, one is that the beer was under pressure so stopped it freezing and the other is that the gas in the beer stopped it freezing...or a combination of the two? Any thoughts? walshie 2,804
I saw this done with coke on a magic program. It's the pressure and carbon dioxide that lowers the freezing point of the water in the beer. Once pressure of the carbon dioxide is released it behaves as ice cold liquid should. (The whole beer would freeze unopened if your freezer was cold enough.)

scothunter 12,609
you can do it with frozen water. it seems to appear to be still liquid but very cold, but once disturbed it just goes like ice before your very eyes.quite cool to see it.but its a fine window between going frozen and remaining liquid.need to time it just spot on. Not sure what caused the beer to spill though.... Guess that as the water in the beer turned to ice it expands forcing some of the beer out.
