CWN-HELA 228
Thats good price you are getting. We drift on a sandy beach with 100yards and a rope about 15-20 yards, let the tide lift and walk back leaving net there once the rope is out you can pull it in a bit, soon as it gets bit of water under her she will drift. Tiercel 6,986
It does not matter if the net swings parallel to the beach in the tide as fish swim accross the tide as well as with the tide. A heavy piece of chain on the seaward end of the net would help the net straighten out in the tide. Or you could lay the net parallel to the water with the chain on the up tide side of the net. and wait for the tide to lift it. A long piece of 6mm tied to the chain would ensure the net did not get away from you. TC Edited June 20, 2013 by tiercel Quote Link to post

perthshire keeper 1,239
this is that mackerel net i was asking about TC its looking good! just got it done in the rain! first stretch out the head line with floats roughly in the right place then the net to follow i always bag the bit of net ive done and just keep pulling and hanging as i go head line and lead line at the same time wheni join in a new needle i always tie it on about a inch behind the last one ive finished dont be tempted to tie it in as you would a rabbit net mono looks for a reason to tangle........dont give it one! 8 mesh into 9 inch hanging as per TCs sugestions i normaly use a guide rope with tapes on it to tell me where to put my hangings but as on this one i use my needle as its.......9 inch lol hear you can see the guide rope in the backgroung (the blue one) this is about the size hangings i felt right for this net i loie a good hanging on my other gill nets about a fist deep as the twine will shrink on trammels i have it about 1.5inch drop on the hangings so it shrinks tight that gives the flat fish less to wiggle under! and its done! whoop whoop, the last float the double is some thing ive always been told to do same as the first if you put end ropes (i dont) on your nets it will help keep them boyent, finished it in the rain just gota wait till them mackrel show up in numbers! 2 Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
Nice bit of rigging PK if you are worried about the flat fish going through the hangings why dont you rig it Danish rig? That is designed for flat fish. What you have to remember is if a net is anchored in a run of tide, as in a beach net laid across the run of tide no matter how much buoyancy the floats give, will lay flat for most of the net. Remembering the rule of 12ths 1st hour 1/12th 2nd hr 2/12ths 3hr 3/12ths 4hr 3/12ths 5hr 2/12ths 6th hr 1/12th you can predict by dividing the height of the tide by 12 how much water and run of tide will be affecting you net by it's placement on the beach. TC i have sole nets rigged danish its good but i dont like it for trammels it saves rigging time thou. yeh the nets only fish properly at slack water and most of our fish are in the top 10 mmeshes. we fish the trammels and turbot nets parallel with the waves they always catch flatfish and skate better..well we fish nets in a L shape with a 100m gillnet running down to the low water the on the right hand side at the bottom we have a 100m trammel, the idear is that ( and it kinda works) the bigger turbot hit the gill net with the ebbing tide and follow it down into the trammel the plan must work beacause most the bigger fish are in the first 10m of net 2 Quote Link to post
