Wms 'sniper For A Day' Experience

Recommended Posts

Ay up Chaps

I've just returned home from a 'sniper for the day' experience at WMS in mid wales and just had to say that this was THE very best shooting day I have ever been on, and I've been on plenty.

Professionally run, unbelievable ranges and they have you shooting at, and hitting targets out to over 800 yards at the end of the day.

Think I'm about to sell all of my other stuff and buy a decent AI 308 sniper gun, FANTASTIC GUYS, WELL DONE.

Gonna deffo be back soon. Thanks to Neil and Jon for a FAB day

Shit, this is gonna be expensive!!!

You want .338 Lapua Magnum if you want the ultimate in long distance calibres.

Only thing is I'm not sure its available to civilians in the UK (you'd have to check).

This is the same calibre that a Sniper Corpral in the Household Cavalry used to make a double confirmed kill in Afganistan at a range of 2,707 yards or 1.54 miles!!

There are no restrictions on which calibres can be owned by the public in the UK, providing you can give the usual "good reason",

In the OPs case, membership of a club that shoots on ranges approved for the .338.

SS ;)

That's good. I just wondered because I've never ever seen a rifle chambered for it for sale in the UK, even amongst the "sniper rifles".

Sounds great. But as with most things in life, it doesn't look like they cater for people with a physical disabilitiy. In my case walking very far. However................, You said, " they have you shooting at, and hitting targets out to over 800 yards"

The site states the £220 covers 50 .22lr and 50 .223. Were you shooting at 800 yards with .223 rounds!? :icon_eek: Or can you pay extra for the .308 use/rounds??

Just to add, i'm not "poo pooing" the site or the "experience". It looks the dogs boll****! I'd love to do it!

You can get a marine Scout system for £5K or Accuracy International for around the same.

There are also some AI guns here for less than £3K:

http://www.sportingservices.co.uk/rifle_offers.asp

One other thing to remember, its also down to the shooting skills as much as the gun.

I'm a great fan of this guys videos, not sure what he was, ex military but I suspect Marine Scout Sniper or similar. He's an awesome shot and gives some great product advice in his sniper series of 42 videos.

He even factors the earths rotation and ambient temperature into his calculations!

This guy has 1,500 yard shots with 1st time hits on video as well as this one - 1,021 yards with .243 using a budget Ruger M77 and SWA scope - 2nd shot! 1st shot missed due to hotter ammo than expected due to the sunlight!

Awesome coach as well!

Here he hits a beer can from 1,236 yards with .338 Lapua - 1st shot!

That is 1 small target!

Just shows how much shooting skill comes into it especially with a target that small or a cheap rifle / scope combination.

Finally if you think thats a fluke, 1,804 yards 1st shot with .338 lapua in windy conditions!:

Hey Jam1e, most of the day would not be a problem with your lack of mobility except maybe for the mid session which involves driving up a very steep hill track to a mountain peak and shooting across a valley at 500 - 600 yard targets, you can only drive 9/10ths of the way up and the rest is an uphill walk about 50 yards, but I'm sure you could make it with a little help and well worth the effort, I am absolutely sure the instructors would assist and there were 6 in our shooting party yesterday, bloody hell ! we could've carried you if necessary.

The day starts with an initial assessment using an M4 in .22 rimfire at metal targets on a 50 metre and 100 metre range, we never bothered with the 5.56, went straight onto the 7.62 out to 200, 300 and 500 metre ranges, then we headed up the mountain and afterwards came back to round the day off at 750 metres or 820yards. The first and last parts of the day are the same location and you can drive up to the front door of the shooting positions.

Phone them up, ask them, they are super approachable and friendly people as most ex military SF personnel are
