NEWKID 27,048
Anybody ever seen the rare Oozlum bird?? My favourite has to be the little wren, love seeing them or maybe the hunters friend the robin not exactly uncommon but my favourites It's not always the rare birds mate, I like watching the gold and green finches on the feeders..... My lad says he wants a pet blue tit cause they're his favourite lol Blue tit's lovely little creatures use to protect two nest boxes on a golf course every year from the usual vermin, got some good photos of the chicks too I also have a picture of a just-out-of-the-nest wild parrot here sat on the mrs's foot for no reason other than it wanted too I watched a Greater Spotted Woodpecker raise its young from start to finish when I was 14 or so, it had nested in a tree behind my house on the river banks, I'd sit under the tree and watch the parents bring food back, then watched the fledglings leave...Waited for a pair of long tail tits to raise they're brood ( same sort of age) then I took the nest ( lovely thing a perfect egg shaped dome with a little hole in the top)........the wren makes a nice best too... Not like pigeons they just can't be assed lol Like a lot of us my whole time was spent in the woods and river banks, Did the same myself Kev, was only telling the missus about it the other day. Always a nest in a holly tree down by my Dad's house but the Jays give them hell. This one was in a bloody big gorse bush Johnny, I was shredded after lol
welshphil 169
I'm lucky with the bird life by me, see all sorts on the feeders in the garden. Got a few sparrowhawks and a peregrine local, buzzards everywhere I've heard rumours of a few kite further down the valley though not seen one myself round here. Get wagtails(pied and yellow), seen a couple of dippers this morning, got Kingfishers down on my river but can't get a picture for love nor money Was up the pond yesterday and there's a pair of grebes up there, Heron numbers round here have really exploded round here the last decade, don't see any Lapwings round here now though. John, you're slipping butt - there was a red kites nest 15 mins walk from your house last year, laid two eggs, one hatched but didn't survive one of the many storms we had last summer! Also saw a peregrine take a racing pigeon above the park a couple of years ago......

Outlaw Pete 2,224
Pip; Reed Bunting is a nest I'd love to find! We have then round here. Whitethroat would be a goody too. Do you do the official Nest Recording bit, or just for shits and giggles?

Do you do the official Nest Recording bit, or just for shits and giggles? Found a yellowhammers nest last year, the dog put it up. Was a right little egg thief in my youth......long time ago. Here's my garden list this year for nests. Mistle thrush, blue tit, dunnock, robin, pied wagtail, goldfinch, chaffinch, collared dove, wood pigeon, crow(can you believe it ! Shot the nest out twice !) blackbird. Pretty sure Chiffchaf and blackcap will have nested and one or two more. Going to put an owl box up next year and a communal tree sparrow box.......I am blessed. F**king amazing what we take for granted nowadays, isn't it? I remember Dreaming of ever owning an SLR camera with a macro lens facility, so that I could take only photo's. Little did I know I'd live to see the day when I carried a camera the size of ten No.6 and it took sharp photo's of eggs in the nest. Which I'd then show friends in other f**king countries, instantly, from my own living room! But, yeah; We still drag and tap and poke about with a stick, eh? Somethings never change. Here. Don't know if you'd like to make something worth while of ye adventures? Put something back in, for all the birds you've killed earlier. (That's not a dig either. We all did it ) I always consider it a crying shame though, when guys of your experience just file it all away in a virtual drawer. I hunt nests, now, to ring the chicks. Wanted to do that all my life. Situation there's changed for the better too
Outlaw Pete 2,224
Worth the value of the cabinet, Lurker1. And, what would anyone do with such a cabinet these days? Wild birds eggs are contraband. Period. No if', but's or give me a break's. Like bits of badgers. Only, ye can get away with antique badgers. I'd imagine they'd turn a blind eye to a sealed, internally labelled case too, if it happened to contain a bird, nest and eggs from a by gone era. But, egg collections? Even century old ones? No way. Only thing to do is roll them with a pastry pin. Because there's simply no way ye allowed to have, pass on, sell or do f**k all else with them. And, no. Natural History Museum won't want them either. They have their own. Make them disappear. Or hope to f**k you never gave a gavver in your home. That's the law. I didn't make it
Outlaw Pete 2,224
Bell; What I wouldn't give to get into your garden, with my ringing kit, mate! I'd have a field day! My own garden list would normally figure something very much like; Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Swallow, Robin, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Dunnock, Blackbird, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Starling, Spotted Flycatcher, Willow Warbler. This year's been a total disaster. Rung, so far ....? One, small box of Great Tits. Armageddon
