pip1968 2,490 Posted June 11, 2013 Report Share Posted June 11, 2013 my mate called before with his new pups and asked if i wanted a walk just to exercise them on the back field so out came the egging sticks as the dogs done their own thing,me and him started to hit the bushes and long grass well just infront of me a greenfinch flew out and i spotted the nest at the top of a blackberry bush,i got thorned all over getting to it only to find it hadnt laid yet but i will keep an eye on it Quote Link to post Share on other sites
fireman 10,919 Posted June 11, 2013 Report Share Posted June 11, 2013 Sounds like your mate just watched spring watch and what a bunch of clowns showing folk that ffs.Every tom dick and harry will be out bashing hedge rows up and down the country and putting birds off nests,sitting and watching is the proper way to do it and finding them that way is proper field craft not BBC bollocks. But the first and only time I saw a sea eagle over in Angus I was gobsmacked. They are f***ing huge See golden eagles and other flying vermin(joke ) on a regular basis up the tops. To be fair though? I have several readily available books detailing the best ways to try and find most birds nests. Proper use of a stick is part of one of those ways. Big issue here is that I took the trouble to find and buy those books. Then I read them. Then I went out and put it into practice. This being backed up by Mentoring from a fully licensed and quite ridiculously experienced nest finder / ringer. So, yes. I now hold a permit to do what I do. I gained that with a lot of effort and study. I really enjoy what I do too. Because there's such a reward for finding that nest. I get the ring the young. Average person, sat their picking their nose as they watch some 'celebrity naturalists' slap about with a stick for three minutes? Work it out. They'll try it for the same time. Then get bored with carrying a stick and will chuck it down on the way back to the motor. Those who really feel they'd be up for endlessly walking the hedgerows, looking for birds nests? These days, they join the Nest Records Scheme, as I linked to above. As for that 00.0 something silly of the population who, even in this day and age feel a real need to go out there and take wild birds eggs? Do you really believe a segment of a programme like " Spring Watch " is going to reveal some secret of their craft to them? Those boys are the evil f**king twins of my Trainer. I sat and watched lots of broods raised when I was a lad, from blackbirds to woodpeckers, ducks, finches and tits all sorts.. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
