20 years ago Icey if not longer my uncle Josie seen those dogs running he said most was doubled up in fact nearly all,a cousin of mine hunted and led darky dog he said 9 times out of 10 doubled up but very good dog,as was a small Irish terrier cross 23 inch but she was doubled up to he hunted old castle at the time with king and the lads that was a long time ago,I gave up the uncle Josie a box set of lucky all single and he said no comparison to dogs he seen running years ago he could not belive how good those lucky dogs were,I might bring him gamefair lol everytime I call to the house it's like a hurricane blowing through sitting room him looking at tina Luke spinner lucky,he knows box set of by heart now lol

When i use to hunt a bit after hare back in the late 80's and early 90's the dogs were mosty doubled up as well. Their was no talk of matches then, or big money changing hands much, just going out for the craic and getting a hunt. A good few were caught, went to tulsk, roscommon, castlerea, plenty about, you would be lucky to see 1 their now...also, gone hot due to pricks in gangs with loose dogs killing sheep ect! Bring back the good auld days..lol... Their was also some very good dogs, no excuses then, if a dog yapped, jacked, go wide and have a low catch rate, it was put down humanely without a thought! Hares were also eaten for the pot, not thrown in a ditch or drain...! Prehaps i am looking threw rose tinted glasses, but that's just how it was back then.

Exactly saluki246,that's what my uncle was used to seeing and only went out for the crack and banter he was a character,and only went out for the laugh a real proper game hunting man,he only seeing a couple of dogs running at the time and only hunted around co Sligo rosscommon areas,he reckons Tina was ten times a bitch any of the dogs he seeing running diffrant class,but nowadays I think you need a dog that can run on cause a lot less hares now then there was back then you still need the speed but a steady dog with stay should work it,see I think that's thing a lot of men living back in the past and breeding of stuff from lines back then and there is more stay in a whippet,they blow out after a minute,but hey that's only what I think,I just enjoy getting out having the crack and watching all types of dog run but I like a dog that can last and is steady

The hares around these days are on fire, if a dog does not have the speed and stay, their gone! Your right about some folk living in the passed too much as well, got to move with the times.

Still, for me, its about the craic and hunt, watching the dogs work and getting them out.. Ill give you a ring at some stage when the season begins captain, we will have a bit of craic, you have done very well the last couple of years, fair play.

Surely the hares in places must be better having been hunted as much as they have been in the last 20 or more years .Lot easer to travel now and good places get hammered so the best are the ones that are left.Saulki blood a must why the black bitch im on about could run hares single handed anywhere I brought her. People say im mad for saying that but most people thought the little bitch that I ran at that time was the best I ever had .Truth is the little bitch could and did kill a lot of hares but at the right time of year she would struggle to stop them .If I ran them double as I did and most people at the time did the little bitch would kill almost every hare they ran.This hunting game is strange all people see is a dead hare seems the time of year or the amount of dogs after it or letting it run where it wants to go don't matter as long as its dead.You lads that are not long at the game listen to a lot of shite but take a bit of advice wait till the right time of year give the hare a fair start let out yer dog on its own and then yea will know what yea have .It don't matter what way its bred if it can do the job that's all that counts as I said on here before if we new how all these great dogs could be bred we would all have them.
