mucky paws 495
With smallish land here wire gates ect and the hares knowing how to use them why are some people trying to justify plodders. do you think its only the irish bred dogs that can jump,iv a wolly bitch here that was killing big ears in feb at 10 months, ive seen a full saluki killing in Ireland in very small fields, its a lot to do where the dogs are running,so called plodders learn to run that way because they know they have the time to do it ,the same as some of the irish dogs get blown to bits because there trying to hard, when running across the pond 5 Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
any good dog will jump and do its level best to kill regardless of the land its running on, what most do is simply use dogs that may look like they plodding on the fens ,but reality is they going hammer and tongs most the chase, just looks slow, tested proven killer to tested proven killer the only way forward imho don't het me wrong some just built to go faster and some built to go longer its gettoing the right balance, 1 Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
a fast starter, sort that puts a couple of test bends into hare soon as he gets there, see how strong the hare is, that the sort ya want for smaller land imho, but they gotta have wind and heart to hang on cos some just won't die that easy fen or field, but i f they wobble after a couple of pokes then you want one with gob for the job no point in runnign it for longer than needed, am suprised more buddy stff aint gone over the water, he seems to produce pushy types that like to use their mouths 5 Quote Link to post
salukixgrey 779
i got a whooly pup thats 8 months and jumps barbwire ect, ive allways had him out mooching by me getting him used to objects and how to overcome them, walking forests ect.i think its how there bought up and were, if you dont teach a pup to jump you cant exspect them to do it. i had a dog i bought in and i seen it all over long ears a run into a fence and just stand there, probally cause it never got out much as a pup?? i dunno. i dont run fen land so i like to teach them how to do things that come in handy when out working. i wouldnt keep a plodder though wouldnt suit me at all Edited June 8, 2013 by salukixgrey Quote Link to post

iceman001979 1,316
The point is you have a wizz bang is f****d half min and half and a plodder does not have the speed to break the hare. What you need is a dog that as both or in another way a dog that has gears not just the one. Quote Link to post
mucky paws 495
iv got a wolly bitch there meant to be plodders il run ya come the winter 1 Quote Link to post

desertbred 5,490
A good dog runs them according to the land and what is needed up and down the gears or on and snap, Most of the dogs that get blown away on the big land are the powder kegs staight in for the take if they miss they get dragged all over and burn out. , a dog that can use its head will come good nearly every time/.
