The member on here rake about has all the exotic crosses a bit more expensive than a ferret but well worth it , but he dont like to talk about or show his extensive crosses off Yeah Ive seen some oh his posts hes a big fan of eu polecats and micro ferrets to lol. comanche 2,923 Posted June 5, 2013 Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 Despite the mink's capacity for delayed implantation which might be an obvious stumbling block at first glance its well known that mink -ferret hybrids can be encouraged under artificial circumstances . They have also been recorded in the wild where polecat populations are low and hormonal polecats have engaged in cross-species sex when members of their own species have been unavailable . Its pretty much the end of the line though as fertility is low or non-existant in the offspring as it is with most "mules". A stoat mating has to be in a different league though . Stoats carry the delayed implantation thing to another level . The babies are born about ten months after mating thought they only develop in the last three or four weeks before birth . Thinking about the different biology of the ferret and the stoat as well as the mechanics of getting them to mate rather than fight makes the cross unlikely I would have thought. But who knows ? I bet the babies would be nervy little things anyway and merely of curiosity value . I've know owners of small ferrets who have claimed that their stock, "must have a bit of stoat somewhere in its breeding " but the things just looked like small ferrets to me . In fact I've had litter runts that whilst being nothing more than small but perfectly formed freds could have been passed off to an unuspecting buyer as something it was'nt . Quote Link to post

Doesn't that apply to the native European mink found on the continent rather than the American mink that we have here? Sure I read it was possible to mule a ferret/polecat with an European mink but not an American one.. Quote Link to post

Ferret sex is more or less rape, so I'm sure a female mustelid could get mated by a horney hob, despite a few bites to the face. Plus with them being so closely related perhaps the parts will match closely enough. I've herd of mink hybrids loads, yeah most likely infertile. Stoats not so much. But why not weasels, just for the size? Surely that would suit the micro fans? Greyhound ferrets is it? But overall, seeing as I need to trust them crawling over my head.... I think I'll stick to the 2000+ year domesticated ferret that has little hope of making regular kills underground haha Quote Link to post

A descent ferret to me is one you work three ,four times a week that can bolt rabbits out a big huge ,deep burrow with the same ease it bolts rabbits out a small burrow and you dont think twice about putting your hand it a dead end to pull out a rabbits its backed up and killed 1 Quote Link to post

I only replied to this one because Comanche posted something interesting! This will be the only one I don't bin, it's a ferreting section people, not an exotic pet forum! I often wonder what sort of replies a dog x coyote/wolf/fox/dingo thread would rightfully get in the dog sections, yet people seem to take leave of their senses over the humble ferret and various other members of the mustelid family..
