Sloppy Poo And Dry Food

my cocker is 10 weeks old. when i collected him he was on skinners puppy food. when he was home with me he had the runs including a bit of blood. so itook him off the dry food and fed him on boil mince/chicken and rice things cleared up in 3/4 days. i have since been putting small amount of the skinners back in his diet at the moment hes on 75% of dry food the rest rice and chicken. the poo is now starting to turn sloppy hes going upto 3 times a day some times not as sloppy as other times. will he adjust to the skinners? or should i try another brand? or will i get sloppy poo with any dry food?

A lot of dogs struggle with the cereal and filler aspect of dry food - which causes them diarrhoea and gut irritation. If you want to feed dry - then find a brand that you can afford, that has meat as one of the top ingredients, rather than cereal. Alternatively, feed raw, if the pup is showing signs of being intolerant of cereals, this may be the easier option.

There are lots of reasons that could account for sloppy stools, sounded like it had a bout of colitis in the first instance and this can re occur. Go for small meals and if becoming symptomatic go back to chicken and rice for a while. The pup will need to develop gut bacteria and the completes will aid this as it has the fibre that they depend on.

 

Bare in mind over feeding can cause loose stools.

 

The whole food allergy stuff is over hyped, dogs digest cereals very well and allergies to cereals are pretty rare.

 

Changing food can just exacerbate the problem.

 

I’d stick with what you have been doing, go for small regular meals, keep the worming up to date and if further episode of bloody diarrhoea consider the vet.

 

Ps the increased stool with completes is because it contains a fair amount of fibre this adds bulk, this is then used by the gut bacteria so you get increased bacteria in the lower gut, the residual fibre and spent bacteria adds bulk to the stool. It’s not a bad but a good thing unless you overfeed then its just undigested bulk.

One would expect a dog fed an average complete to produce a stool that might have an average composition by dry weight, bacteria (30%), undigested food and fiber (30%), fat (10%-20%), inorganic matter ( 10-20%), other protein(2-3%).

I use skinners and had same problems ( other than the bleeding ) and tried every thing adding lights , chicken carcass twice a week and tripe ! In the end went back to field and trail 23 now two meals a day 200 grams in morning 150 at night and now sound !! Only thing I could put it down to was over feeding , skinners has a lot of oils but one of the better dry foods for price

Ay the moment he's 10 weeks and 5.5 kilo,on 4 meals a day of 50 gms rice,40 gms skinners,and 15 gms of boil chicken is this to much?
