Malt 379
Think all of ours are the F35B STOVL versions mate, not 100% sure on that though..
Nik_B 3,790
The Lightening II is a multi-role fighter with VTOL capability so it can do a bit of everything. BAE are developing an autonomous drone called the Taranis as well which looks very cool.
Malt 379
Oh for fucks sake,,,,boring,,,, I thought it was some sort of ray- gun,, like star treck or somthing,,, that's just like a big bolt for a cross bow.... A heavy crossbow bolt that travels at 5 or 6 times the speed of sound, any better?
TOMO 27,227
It doesn't look very big,,, or is that just an example... How big are these old fashioned cross bow bolts?

Malt 379
It doesn't look very big,,, or is that just an example... How big are these old fashioned cross bow bolts? Dont know mate, but its the speed they are traveling that causes the damage. I read that one of those 'cross bow bolts' can do as much damage as a tomahawk cruise missile and it will get to the target faster. Have you ever seen the difference between a rabbit shot with a .22 and a .17 HMR? The HMR bullet is smaller than the .22 but does more damage because its travelling faster. The same sort of thing applies here but on a much, much larger scale.
Born Hunter 17,832
Think all of ours are the F35B STOVL versions mate, not 100% sure on that though.. You're right. What I meant was, I thought the RN are gearing a number of F-35 fighters towards air superiority and a number towards ground attack? The RAF will be using the F-35 to replace our existing Tornadoes (I was brought up seeing these roar by most weeks!) that forefill the ground attack role but I didn't know if they will be doing the same as the RN and having a number for air superiority as well. It's neither here nor there tbh, just wondered.
Malt 379
Oh right! I'm not sure about that either.. With them being a true multi role plane from the off, I don't think it will matter that much.. They can probably be configured as required with the minimum amount of fuss I know the Typhoon was developed as an out and out air superiority fighter, it's ground attack capability was tacked on after. I'd probably guess that most of the RAF planes will be decked out in ground attack configuration most of the time, with them having the Typhoon as an air to air specialist.
