17Hmr Loosing Zero

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have a problem with my CZ 17hmr style, it keeps loosing its zero every time I use it! I have hawke match style mounts on a weaver rail and a MTC Taipan 6x24x56 scope, Harris adjustable bipods a SAK moderator and I have fitted a lighter yodaves trigger kit.

I have set the eye relief on the scope so I do not have to move my head and so I get a clear image through the scope.

The only thing I can think of is that when I fitted the trigger kit I didn't use a torque wrench on the action bolts I just guessed them.... Could this cause it to loose zero all the time?

Please someone help me haha it's really getting on my nerves! Thanks, dan.

were you taking small step's ?

if the action is loose then yes you will be shooting all over the place but if they are tight then that wont be the problem, you must remember if a mole farts in the next county the .17 poi will be effected!!!!!!!

Make sure that the barrel is not touching the stock. Slide a sheet of paper between the stock and barrel back to the action to ensure clearance. Check to see if the front sling screw does not go through the stock and touch the barrel when in the firing position.

Has it ever had a consistent zero ? eg ; group of 3 in a 2" bull at 100yds

No I have mad sure to shoot it on a calm day ie no breath of wind what so ever and I have free floated the barrel on it as it was catching at the front of the stock. Could it be that I only use a soft gun slip to transport the gun and not a hard case could that be the cause of it loosing zero every time literally? It does group very well when I re zero it, I shoot off sandbags and it groups 5 shots in an inch and a half approximately and it holds it poi as I use it its just when I next come to use it it needs setting up again!

The Style was not designed to have a Floating Barrel, and it hardly matters anyway on a HMR, virtually everyone who mounts a bipod on any of the plastic stock CZ Rimfires, and many of the wood stocks, ends up contacting the barrel, so does anyone who uses a sling, they tend to be rather flexible!

The trigger can wave about like a flag, the stock can contact the barrel as much as you like, ammo can even be clipping the mod (do you have one?) none of that will make it keep losing zero, IF you can set the zero up!

As long as everything is bolted on tight and stays bolted on tight the problem is very likely to be the scope!

So, if I am reading this right. You go out and set up your zero. The rifle then shoots well for that session with reasonable accuracy.

The gun then rests up for a few days and when you go out again the zero has moved.

That sounds like your scope or mounts to me.

Are your scope turrets adjusted anywhere near their extremes? It is certainly a good idea to wind your turrets from one extreme to the other and then back to the centre. Shim the mounts if needed so that when you zero your rifle the turrets are not too far from their central position.

Are your scope mounts properly fitted and nice and tight? There is not much recoil but the scope could get moved about a bit in transit. A soft case is fine.

Good luck

Keeps losing zero isn't much of a description to be honest. as the guy above asks, what exactly is it doing.

Are you zeroing at the end of a range session when it's hot, and then finding it's moved when cold???

What size group are you trying to achieve?

Two dead calms shooting day on the trot are unusual, you may also be chasing the wind

Was that writting for the sake of it lol

When did this problem start? Because if you tell us it started after you dropped the rifle or after you had the barrel cut down we could probably work out what's wrong.

Fitting the trigger kit shouldn't have aFfected it at all unless the stock screws are loose and the action moves in the stock

Sounds more like a scope or mount problem, do you have another scope you can try?

Have you got a really good tight 'face fit' on the stock?. When your cheek is up against the stock can you see straight down the scope or do you have to lift your head?. I had the same problem, never really happy with the HMR's zero, and it was 'face fit'. Packed it out so now the cheek is nice and tight and i look straight down the barrel. Getting an inch groups, give or take, at 100yrds.

      Hello all.?
Just an update as it has been a while.I have been looking for a subsonic .22LR hollow point that shoots well from a cold clean bore and have recently started using RWS subs which do well, typically from the first shot..I have used a few different brands of subsonic H.P.s and they all group quite well after 5 or so fouling shots, but RWS like the cold clean bore, needless to say I am a happy and for me, decent shooting.?.I have used the RWS before in the old Annie 1416 DG and it was equally consistent in that rifle.
A couple of typical below all from a cold clean bore..My scope is a Hawke Vantage x2 -x7 32mm A.O. with illuminated reticle which is a great field scope but lacks magnification for target shooting so is sometimes difficult to deduce if a shot has been pulled, but I love the scope.
      Have a good weekend all.?

Hi all, just an update.I have had this rifle for over a year now and still really like it a lot. I have not modified it in any way and it is as out of the box.
It is an easy rifle to shoot well with a pretty good trigger (pulling at 2.6 lbs out of the box and very smooth), accurate, lightweight and utterly reliable.
I now have the benefit of hindsight and  purchasing this rifle was a good decision and I would do so again absolutely.
I use an inexpensive but very good Hawke Vantage x2-x7 32mm A.O. scope with an illuminated reticle. I sometimes use a SAK moderator on the gun, a very good mod.
      Have a good weekend.?.
