Sorry lads been busy, Outlaw Pete- All it is is a mate has a nest full of Blackbird chicks from a tree felling in a neighbours garden that he's hand rearing, he's had british birds since he was a kid, so hand rearing to him is a breeze, all he wants to do is colour ring the chicks with split rings so he can see if they return to his area next year after they migrate, he has no ringing licence so cant get the proper rings, but finding the right size of ring seems the most challenging part of the project.

Fireman- No parents with rings to look at for guidance, he just wants to get the right size ring, and as you can imagine, licenced ringers are being a little lapse with their info.

:( Oh dear. What to say? I'm afraid I am a licensed ringer. And I wouldn't be for much longer if I didn't point out to you and your mate that any form of ringing of wild birds is illegal. On top of which, colour ringing wild birds can seriously mess with someone elses licensed activities.

Consider this; What if I'm colour ringing Blackbirds. Red ring on the left leg. And your mate happens to do the same. Then, one of his gets hit by a motor and reported. The BTO then inform me that one of my subjects has turned up dead.

Obviously, that teaches us all a falsehood. We'll think it's been scientifically proven that a bird has travelled from A to B. When it was actually released in B.

Brainwave! Given his involvement with keeping native species, I don't know what sort of reception he'd get, if he applied to train as a ringer. But, I reckon if he contacted the BTO, they might well be able to put him in touch with a licensed ringer who could pop round and ring them for him.

Wouldn't be colour rings as they're very fussy about allowing those. But, I've rung my local blackbirds and can easily see their rings when they turn up.

How's that sound? Got to be worth a shot? All above board and legal. Everybody wins! :good:
