Could Never Shoot A O/u As Good As Semi's

Recommended Posts

I have always been able to shoot semi's better than o/u not matter what brand the shotgun would be and have always felt that semi's felt alot more natural and ots always fun when my mates wind me up at clays at then i win ;)

And yes have shoot several different types of o/u before you o/u guys have a huff and have owned several o/u aswell to tell the truth the only o/u i got on with was a beretta supersport best o/u i ever think made., just because of the manner in wich it shoots.

I'm the opposite mate I can't shoot a semi to save my life have owned a couple and pumps and I just can't get on with them and I hate the way they just throw the empties out! When I'm sat up to my Arse in water on an evening flight I can't garentee I've picked them all up, and when the water recides I would soon lose my permission if the farmer found the fields full of empty cartridges. i dont like semi's myself, i find i shoot more erratically knowing ive got that extra shot if needed.some of my best days have been with the single 410 over ferrets. each to their own.

Must admit I like semis.

But I think with any shotgun its more down to the balance of the gun than the type.

There's a lot of bias against semis on safety grounds although I've never seen any evidence of anyone being less safe with one than a break barrel. Especially if you have a chamber flag:

I'd say use what ever you're comfortable with.

I personally use Browning and wouldn't touch Beretta as I think Browning are much more neutrally balanced. However, you'll find people who say the exact opposite.

You got to love the comments like if you can shoot you can shoot!!!

I'll give you a go with a old baikel i had no one could shoot it it was terrible the rib tapered down low and the barrels pointed high no matter who tried it they couldn't hit a barn door

I find Semi's are better balanced for me and i prefer bigger guns and emi's are usual always bigger than s/s and o/u.

I have owned a few beretta o/u and a few old s/s but the semi always has felt better to me from day one

I also find tall people like semi and short arses prefer o/u.

Im 6 " 3 and like my over and under you get a lot less recoil with a o/u thats why a lot of clay shooters use them

I rate baikal i started with one and baikal cartridges (record ) they really suited each other kicked like a mule and a big smoke cloud but if you hit anything it was dead maybe because it was choked full and half . I up graded to rizzenni but after i dropped it i went back to a bakial o/u and for shooting rabbits and pigeons its a great knock about gun

I must admit I only shot a semi the oncewhen clay shooting, but I remember it being less recoil than the O/U. Something I believe was to do with the fact that some of the gases are recycled to the ejector. I loved it because of that. The downside was you could get the occassional cartridge that bounced off the cage upon ejection. Maybe the recoil depends on the semi brand - never shot Baikal. I think the semi I shot was Browning or Beretta but can't remember as it was some years ago. I do remember though thinking that I wanted to go out and buy one instead of an O/U.

If the OP finds the semi is better balanced than his Beretta, then maybe he should try a Browning O/U as well. I find them much better than Beretta. As I said above, its personal preference, but its worth trying everything before making an expensive decision and at least that way, he's tried both major O/U manufacturers + the semi he's been shooting so should have a feel for which one he prefers best.

Im pretty sure you'd get less recoil with a semi auto? A Semi auto usually has a gas assisted system, which in turn will lessen the perceived recoil, and therefore having less recoil than a O/U. But factors that will contribute to the recoil felt is obviously the weight of your loads and weight of the gun etc. But generally, a semi auto will have less recoil.

My mate has a wee baikel o/u and wee all shoot well with it for a gun that cost £100 in basically new condition. I told him my s/s baikel was terrible to shoot and as per usual the old joke's started i said don't worry I'll bring it nxt day were doing clay's, 10 clay's later he handed back and said

f.u.c.k that heap of junk so then i started the joke's.

Also told him he's shooting his baikel very well and for the sach of £100 never get rid of it if you can shoot it.

I learnt the hard way and got rid of a beretta a302 which i felt real comfortable shooting then got a cheap bettinsoli and realised i should have never got rid of the beretta.

That's what i always lead to believe but after trying afew good quality o/u especially one's with ported barrels like the bereft supersport have almost no recoil to my current a390 semi but on the other hand some o/u would knock you teeth out.

The ported barrels are a great job.

I love my Benneli, and would not swap it, I also love s/s I have quite a nice little Baikal 16g s/s hammer gun and it shoots really well,my least favourite guns are over and unders, I can certainly shoot them, but I just don't like them particularly, borrowed my mates Berreta on the pheasants last season and I must say I hit nearly everything I pointed it at, would I buy one? No its all about personal taste.

"A good workman never blames his tools".... A gun fitting you is more important than what type it is. I grew up using guns that cost a tuppence... They were s/s and o/u, different weights and lengths and you grabbed the first gun and went shooting. Somedays you couldn't miss and done days you were shite but I never blamed the gun.

My Grandads gun, a 20 browning, lovely wee gun... Couldn't miss with it and every time I felt confident with it. I recently got a gun from an uncle of mine..canny hit shit with it. Tried all different chokes the lot..... Still think its down to my confidence in it rather than the gun.

I find shooting similar to golf..... Naturals will always do better than people who have to try at it...:-)

Aye lab same here it all came down to coin you started with a single barrel in my case that was a bakial , traded up to the o/u as it was the cheapest , then next was the rizzinni burst that then back to a bakial o/u never had a gun fitting or tried a gun i was buying at clays , cheapest shells Oh thats bakails as well get a few guys together bought 5000 between you and get out there . Its the same when we are lamping we pass the air rifle and rifle to each other for how ever's in the best place for the shoot there no set up for each of us ?. I would love to have tried a semi or a fitted gun but i do so little shooting now the costs going to come into it again
