Restoring A Rather Negelcted Hw80

Recommended Posts

Hi folks.

I bought this 80 a couple of weeks ago from a member for the princely sum of 75 quid.

Its def seen better times but it has a spare barrel with it which i've stored away for another project after straightening and cleaning it.

Mechanically everything is intact and nowts missing.

Had some sort of camo tape stuck all over it with lots of rust underneath.

Both barrels and the cocking lever were bent due to the gun being fired while the barrels had been in the open position,

For some reason the safety catch and spring were in a separate bag.

The stock is 30mm shorter after it had been cut down in length, i'll be fixing thi soon with 3 - 10mm hdpe spacers and the colours of the German flag.

A right heap.

Stripped the gun down and began sanding all the dirt and rust out, then a polish up ready for reblueing with the birchwood kit for 15 quid.

The compression tube was polished up on the inside for a smoother shooting cycle.

Next job is to reblue all parts with the birchwood kit.

The barrel and compression tube was taped and plugged to stop the paste getting on to the internal surfaces.

All screws, safety catch and other small parts are blued with Phillips blue paste and given a good oil and set aside to cure.

Next i made a top hat and spring guide from a piece of delrin i was given from a friend, this was a bit of a long process oweing to the fact that i had to do it by hand in my wood lathe, a micrometer for gauging the diameters and a steady hand got it finished in about 3 hours.

4 - 5mm delrin buttons drilled, glued in and turned down to make a nice snug fit in the compression tube, i also sanded and polished the cocking slot and any burrs on all parts.

I then made a piston liner out of a WD40 tin and inserted it. I've now changed this for a new one i made from proper high quality shim sheet of about 0.005 inch. Nearly ready for assembly.

Had to pull out a big heavy piston weight out of the piston.

A sand down and quick squirt of santin paint to tidy up the trigger guard.

I forgot to take pics of the stock which wasn't in too bad a nick, i simply stained it and gave it about 10 coats of oil which i sanded back to a satin finish.

I did not take any pics of the assembly as i was covered in grease and rather excided to get the gun back together and test fired.

The finished article which is now awaiting the 3 - 10mm packers on the stock to complete the job.

This gun cocks as smooth as silk and makes no noise except the click of the piston engaging the trigger sear.

Its already shooting very well and will no doubt group tighter once it beds in.

Making a shate over 11ft/lbs it has a lovely shooting cycle with a pellet sitting quite happily on the scope turret without jumping off.

I'll never part with this gun and at 100 quid all in i'm rather chuffed with the outcome.

What can I say. Thank you very much folks I'm totally chuffed you all like it. The blue was removed with emery and steel wool along with the rust. My 7 year old did alot of this with me. Lol hats of to the seller I see past the rust and knew it would work out. I have a spare barrel worth at least 30 quid too so its an ok deal for me. Especially now that its done and groups inside a 5p at 30 yards no probs. I see where you are coming from though mate;-). Next job is to drop my fac 80 to sub 12 ft/lb for a more enjoyable experience and greater accuracy.

You guys have got me thinking about an 80 with a 98 barrel!

All the very best
