7 Month Old Pup Coursing Good Or Bad

Recommended Posts

I have a 7 month old saluki x whippet and i didnt intend to start working him till he was atleast 12 months old but recently i was walking him and he saw a rabbit while off the lead and chased it but ever since when he sees a rabbit or hare he is raring to go and wants to run it is it bad to let him have the odd run to keep him keen or is it best just to not run him till 12 months ?? please share your opinions

Its usually the other end of the lead that needs the real education, well done for bringing that to mind.

Lol..common sense isnt apparently that going by some of the nonsense you read on these forums? Would any of you send your young children to do the work of an adult? There lies your answer...simple as

As do i,get them out and about, let them look, smell and learn, educate and train them early and reap the rewards later on,the later on bit is the most important, running a pup at 7 months, especially on s

No dog was ever ruined by holding it back, but plenty have been ruined by letting them start too early. Personally I would wait until September, whats the rush, it's summer, let the pup be a pup and work on the other aspects of his training. If he runs a dozen and sees them disappearing he will soon start to pull up, not chase or develop a myriad of problems and in three months time you'll be starting a thread "Why won't my pup chase?" or something similar.

Not quite sure why everybody is in such a rush to get dogs going, it's almost summer anyway.........

I'm not the most experienced when it comes to young running dogs mate though i have had other working dogs most of my life. The dogs bones will still be soft and developing so hard exercise regularly like running rabbits and hares may cause the dog irreversible damage and if the dog isn't fast enough yet to catch there's the possibility of such a young dog yapping out of frustration

Wait - no rush. He has soft bones and a soft mind - a few months it will be a different story. All the " start them young, what harm will it do?" people are usually the people advertising dogs for sale at 16 months old as they have no time/no space etc etc all the usual bollocks, and they just started too early.

start mine early usally ferreting never done them any harm each to there own depends on the breed of dog and size as well

As do i,get them out and about, let them look, smell and learn, educate and train them early and reap the rewards later on,the later on bit is the most important, running a pup at 7 months, especially on something that may take it on a long gallop,is more than careless and a sure sign of disaster in the making.Im all for early education as long as its strictly controlled until the mutt is ready and capable to take advantage of what its learnt and its mind and body are capable.
