cyclonebri1 8
Went a walk out today just looking for the odd pigeon or maggy with the shotgun. My patch is dead at present. No pigeons, and no can see rabbits. There is a wood between two farms I shoot. I gave up on the pigeons, 1 hr and zero after walking round. Dropped my backside on an old dry stone wall looking into the wood I mentioned, it's a bluebell wood, they are knee high at present. Sod all happening, but, I did remember about 10 years ago in this wood I had a fox walk up on me when I was sat on the path through the wood, .22 in hand that day. Given that and that I was thinking no need to clean the gun, I thought I'd have a last few mins , just in case. I loaded 2 BB shells. I was looking across the path that runs through the wood, very steeply down and at an oblique angle, but something caught my eye, it only moved a foot or so but I picked it up. A fox, it moved a few more feet and I only had to correct to be exactly on it. It sounds crass but I knew what would happen, I let the safety off and it froze and turned towards me, BANG, Bolled it over at 20 yards, didn't need a 2nd shot. I only record this as I can only remember 1 other fox under similar circumstances in over 40 years shooting, with the 12g that is. IT's not the fact that I got it so much as the fact that I had the right load and I half expected it Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
NIce evening. I've found no problems with No:3 or above. My usual choice of cartridge always was Gamebore Mammoth High Bird - a high speed, heavy load wildfowling cartridge. I'm sure they used to make them in 2" 3/4 but looking now it seems 3" Magnum is the smallest cartridge. Great fox cartrdige though if you have a gun chambered for 3" magnum. Gamebore claim it will kill geese at 90 yards. I certainly never failed to stop a fox with the 2" 3/4 version. The Gamebore Buffalo 42 gram No: 3 seems to be the nearest cartridge now. It was just about bang on 12 mid day, blazing sunshine but it's so heavily wooded and in a gorge they are often about during daylight. The last 1 I got in there was just about in the same place, if I hadn't shot it with the .22 at about 15yds I'm sure it would have walked right up to me. I bought aaa and bb in 2 3/4", always keep just a couple on the belt. A bit annoying ais I then sold the only non 3" magnum gun I had so could have gone 3" anyway And to the other poster, when my farmer says his ducks are getting taken, every fox I shoot for him helps my position, It was a dog as it happened, wouldn't have made any difference if it wasn't. Cubs?, don't think so, he had his 2 sons with dogs on the job as soon as the nest was spotted in his wood. Edited June 1, 2013 by cyclonebri1 Quote Link to post
