Much depends on the type of ground your going to be running the dog on,for instance if the ground is flint covered,or woodland etc I personally wouldn't be looking at a Grey x Whippet..small horse type paddocks you wouldn't want a heavily blooded Saluki dog..in my opinion I think the Collie x Grey or Bedlington x Grey or Beddy x Whippet types are handy enough for an owner with "L" plates..good rabbiting dogs, biddable and a good starting point for a newbie..you have to remember the dog will be around for many years so choose wisely ... you seem pretty level headed with how you wrote and asked your question so I'm sure you will select the dog that suits you and the type of ground you will mainly encounter? Good luck in your choice..Atb Andy

Thanks for that Andy. I'm going to read a lot and consider lots of good v bad points before I make my decision. I didn't want to get myself something and then find you have to be some kind of expert to train them. Cheers.

Sensible attitude mate..there are believe it or not some good knowledgeable people on here..I'm sure you won't be long in fathoming out the wheat from the chaff lol..are you thinking of a dog for both daytime and nighttime work, ferreting or all three disciplines or just one of them? Atb Andy

Purely for evening mooching mate. Maybe the odd day when I'm off work. It won't be a pure working dog, and it won't be purely a pet. A lot to ask, I know.

you want to get read up on training frist pal as training starts from day one, purdys progress is a good dvd to point you in the right direction, it shows you the training from a pup to its first ferreted rabbit and all the fun stuff in the middle. just remember take your time keep it fun for the pup and good luck!
