as long as you have a valid reason for owning this caliber rifle ie deer and fox control if you apply for use on both spiecies puting deer first you should have

I'm getting lost with all the Bull here, YES, you can have a .243 on first grant for Fox, or whatever you like if you can justify it!   THE END!

I think it depends where you are. i got 243 with my first fac, no mentor or similar. With a DSC 1 or on renewal it is open, which makes little difference really. I really wanted mine open after a couple of years, but as you need permission to shoot the ground, the only difference is it may not be police checked. Most ground is, so the difference is one phone call, or it is here.

Mine is now open and i still shoot in the same places.

243 may be seen as heavy for fox, 222, 223 and 22 250 are excellent fox rounds, but i use the 243 for everything except reds. However regardless what is hit with a 222 or 243 its day is spoilt, so i would hope you would get it granted as you have good cause.

good luck

thank you for the info

Firearms Law says you can have what you can justify!

And also remember the 2002 Home Office Guide to the Police lists .243 as FOX suitable.

So think about some of the replies.........

I run .223, .243, .308, (4 rimfires, a couple of air rifles, inc FAC and some shotguns) I have no need for a 22-250 which with my selection of firearms I consider pointless.

It is noisy, aggressive and fast BUT it is NOT all deer legal. It doesn't work for me on any level, but there are those that find it superb and would never part with it.

WHY 22-250, little or no need for fox/small deer over .222/.223 and if you think you really do need it for those distant fox then why not a .243, which in my opinion is the best long range fox tool available, and ALL deer legal as well, so more versatility, and frankly if you can get a 22-250 grant I struggle to see why you can't a .243.

So do I, it works for me and what I do, but I do have a decent selection of tools, everyone has different shooting situations/requirements and there are lots of other calibres as well!

Yes as said you can have a .243 as a first rifle, but nobody seems to have pointed out to you that your licensing dept will probably put a mentoring clause on your certificate, as you have no experience (or very little in their eyes) with a cf rifle, but it is not the end of the world, get out shooting with whoever mentors you gain some experience and get it removed, it will also help if you can get a covering letter from a person or people who you shoot with and use that calibre or above, get them to support you and say thay deem you suitable, and have been out shooting with them, good luck mate, and just to add a .22-250 is a brilliant calibre, for fox and small deer, and if he ums and ars at a .243 then that calibre will do everything you require of it.
