Neal 1,873
I'd always been firmly in the small lurcher as oppossed to whippet camp. I guess my preference was probably based on the fact that, like a lot of people with their first lurcher, I gave more thought to the base blood than the sighthound involved. However, my brother has three pure whippets and can't sing their praises enough. His appear to be pretty bombproof and by this I mean both physically and, more importantly, mentally. Returning to the original question for this thread: my advice would be that no matter how much theorizing and prethought you give it you can never know what your ideal dog is until you've got one. As well as the job your lad is intending it for and the ground he'll be working it on, there's the big question of temperament and their characters fitting together well. Some people would rather spend a day hare coursing with a 3/4 collie 1/4 greyhound than a saluki and some would prefer ferreting small woods with a deerhound than a bedlington x whippet. I suppose it's a bit like finding the perfect wife...one day something just clicks and you're happy! Meet as many different types as possible (out working, at shows and in their home environment) would be my advice. 2 Quote Link to post
