Stones And Rocks .....

Recommended Posts

I saw a fascinating question, recently. " How big can a stone be, before it becomes classified as a rock? "

Good one, eh? Good answer too. Basically that; ' A stone has to be a separate entity. Biggest stone in england is one called the " Suck Stone ". It's all one piece and not attached to anything.

A Rock is a visible part of a contiguous entity. " Ayres Rock " is the above ground, visible part of a larger mass beneath. '

I thought that was pretty cool. Sort of thing we don't think about, till prompted. And there's our answer. Good, eh?

I read it again today. Then it struck me: 'So; What's a " Boulder "? Then my head exploded!

had one of those questions yesterday funnily enough, it was, when does a sea, stop being a sea and become an ocean.

And don't get me started on the shrimps and prawns debate.

I think pond's/lakes are a similar thing, and also a bushes and a trees. There's no way of defining the size apart from human judgement?

Maybe wrong, think I remember hearing it somewhere :hmm:

if i remember right the pond/lake difference is down to depth. a body of inland water so deep that sunlight cant reach the bottom is a lake, if light reaches the bottom it's a pond, regardless of area covered. dont quote me on it though.
