Hartson never had pace lol, Robbie fowler? I think he's going deeper due to lack of confidence. He always was a box to box striker, I just don't see him as an out and out striker.

He had enough matey and to be honest IMHO he was a lot stronger and used his strength well and there is is difference between how fast you are chasing a ball and how fast you are with a ball at your feet. And, in all honesty Hartson probably wasnt as good as Rooney and nor was Fowler.......Rooney is a lot more versatile IMHO but I think physically he has a limited window in his playing career .
Couldn't agree with you more wilf, spot on in everything you say. I think Rooneys early form was his downfall. He looks the type to give 100% in training etc so I don't think its went to his head like some players who are happy to pick up a wage. If he kept on improving from his early career, what a player he would have been. But he didn't and won't now. England need goal scorers and Rooney isn't the answer.
let me guess hooper is??

Take it from me, hooper couldn't lace Rooneys boots :yes:

Hahahahaha

Win for England no doubt, just put a wedge on it....in fact if England don't win the mods have permission to change my username to "Tarquin"

C'mon butty, you was the one who said you'd change your name, I'm gonna PM IanB and get it sorted.

Amazingly enough, I agree with Baw.......lets face facts, if you like good football then you wouldnt pay to go and see England.

As a team, England are mediocre at best.........no one has figured out why in the last 46 years so I dont suppose we will do it here !!!

We never seem comfortable, dont know why, but we dont.

You don't look comfortable. You look good for 10 minutes, passing, running, looking dangerous then some backwater team strings a couple of passes together and you look terrified, hurried passes to no one etc. it's mental to watch as a neutral. You see millions of £'s of quality players really struggle to do the basics at times. It must be a confidence thing. Is it due to the pressure from the fans/media expecting to always win, I dunno.

That is exactly how I see it matey, spot on.

.

I agree with that but more a case of too much too soon..............these kids who burst onto the scene at such a high level just dont seem to be able to kick on as their careers continue.....Michael Owen was a classic example......Rooney,Walcott.

The physical explosive vigour they have as kids doesnt last.......meaning they then have to rely on their pure footballing ability..............they are very good players but dont seem to reach the level we think they will after the starts they have.

My theory with England is that we are constantly trying to copy the succesful nations we never stick to what we do best..........probably the last squad who played to our own strengths was Bobby Robsons side with Gazza/Lineker etc............ever since then we are continuosly trying to be something we,re not......all this slow build up from the back over the last few years because thats how the Spanish play..................the Germans play a traditional 4-4-2 and have just had 2 sides in the Champions League final !!....but they play to their strength and dont try to copy other nations...................and thats what i think we need to do,yes work on our weaknesses but make more of an effort to play to our strengths.

I agree Gnash, but I'd say the last side we had playing to our strengths was Venables side in 96, ... 2 proper forwards in shearer and sheringham, Gazza on form and a solid back four with the likes of Pearce and Adams... We still never had great wingers though but Anderton and macmanaman delivered...
