foresterj 1,096
No not that kind, im referring to 'nose' or scenting ability in our animals, obviously it's hugely important to them virtually the primary sense we are told, however do we value it as highly as part of their working arsenal? Dogs that are marking etc then it's use is obvious, im thinking more of how much of a role it plays eg when a dog is actually running, in or out of cover, into driving rain, out of the lamp and so on.do you find different breeds better scenters or opportunity and success can create a good nose, or just not bothered about it? Personally I do like to see good HOOTERS doing their thing(aye those ones). Quote Link to post
Guest thebigdog
a good nose makes a world of difference imo. I don't think any cross is better than any other really, it comes down to how the dog is raised, if a dog is brought up as a point and slip merchant and never given a real chance to use its nose as pup, it wont use it to the same extent a dog that had more freedom to follow scent would. 2 Quote Link to post

Simoman 110
Lurcher with a good baseline of collie/gundog/GSD tend to have better scenting abilities....... Quote Link to post

nothernlite 18,089
good nose and a bit of brain means everything to me in a dog mostly mooching and ferreting i do with mine and it takes a clever dog not to use it at night while lamping 1 Quote Link to post
foresterj 1,096
I think they must use it at night NL, if its a primary sense its how you think they use it in different situations that I was waffling on about, as opposed to the obvious ways we normally think of.walking with the lamp off and the dog pulls other way, lamp on rabbit there, that type o thing, or both go out the beam into drivin rain howlin gale pitch black yet the dog coes back with its rabbit, its certain it couldn't see it, how much would nose feature then? Thats more what I meant bud 1 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
For us, a good nose is essential. I have been absolutely amazed that the whippet has one of the best noses I have ever seen for both air and ground scent. Surprised me for a pure sight hound? Quote Link to post

I think all pures and crosses have the potential if they're given the opportunity to exploit it and learn how to use it. Quote Link to post
