Bushing Dog Section

If you live in a populated area and just want to quietly cut about knocking over a few bits and bobs then the last thing you need is some yapping mongrel attracting the whole world and its mother

It,s been on the site suggestions section for ages , maybe because there wont be any macho bragging and childish challenges thrown out ,it not considered interesting enough.

it could go under the name off FAILED EARTH DOG NEEDS REHOMING lol could get quite big numbers in it haha

A bushing dog section would be a nice diversion from that "Irish lads chat section"

If you live in a populated area and just want to quietly cut about knocking over a few bits and bobs then the last thing you need is some yapping mongrel attracting the whole world and its mother

Then you still wouldn't want them alerting every critter within half a mile, again JMHO matey

Wilf, these lurchers you have sound decent animals.

But for what I do I have to make do with the addition of a noisy little terrier.

Not at all mate, I only have one and he is in no way special to anyone but me, but I have to say I take this view, if a very ordinary animal like mine can do these things then any lurcher can and have seen quiet a few do it when left to their own devices

i hear you mate and agree in a sense!! i lost my terrier couple of years back........he f****d off with my two lurchers at the time and never came back.........searched all the ground and earths for days after i lost him but could not find hind nor hair of him...... :cray: my bull cross bitch will work cover no matter how thick........ but when old matey is shooting across the field (pre ban) i no were id prefer her to be............ :icon_redface: a lurcher can hunt cover mate of that theres no doubt but as a team a dedicated bushing dog thats good at its job and gives the lurcher side of the team all the chances it needs then that dog is priceless imo............ :victory:

Fair one mate, but there has been a dog bred for generations to excel at that job and it is yet to be bettered, it's called a spaniel and we already have a section for those

I accept what you are saying to a point mate.

I come from a spaniel family, and have seen some very very top spaniels work. Some of the best.

But when I was looking for a dog to do the sort of flushing job I require, I wanted something that would follow scent well, work cover well, would make noise on a scent, would get stuck in if needed (and so chase), and would not go to ground.

Which for me, ruled out a spaniel, I could never stand to look at one that yipped, yapped, chased or was hard mouthed.

And it ruled out a terrier, due to the underground issue.

So i went for a specialized x breed, purpose bred for the task in hand, and if she keeps going the wee hound x will have some top cocker blood put to her, to produce more specialized dogs that will suit (I hope) my purposes.

And for the spaniel work, we have the spaniel

Do you not think that most half decent lurchers will hunt a line on their own anyway mate without all the un-necessary noise that lets be honest, we can all do without in today's era of nosy parkers?

Yes I do! In fact, that is right up there with the most important characteristics for a running dog to have. However, no running dog can get into and work cover (and still effectively catch the flushing quarry). We are lucky enough to have a good number of places where the noise isnt an issue, and is in fact a real bonus. Some of the places, and attempted catches would never work, sending the running dogs in to work it, they need to be kept outside on watch, so to speak.

Also, being really honest, I just enjoy that kind of hunting.

I also really enjoy spaniel work  But to me, it's two different things

Just in case any of you know, I asked this on the terrier section;

I followed the 'Show us your bushing dogs' thread and really liked the look of Brockdogs Beagle Russell dog. I'd also heard that it is a good worker too but I've searched for him on here and it says that he's been kicked off....?

I'm considering putting my Russell type bitch (nearly 5) into pup to keep one back. I'm in no rush and it won't be done unless I find the right dog.

She is a fantastic all rounder with a good nose and constant prey drive. Will do anything I say and is very biddable. She ferrets, rats, would probably take squirrel - mark them in trees, catch and kill them etc. if squirrel was legal quarry....... and has worked below ground a few times but is a bit too soft.

So, does anyone have any info on why he was kicked off here? If it was just a case of upsetting the wrong people then does anyone have any contact details for him?

Also, if anyone has or can recommend a good bushing and ratting dog then please let me know. Preferably mainly russell but a beagle russell would do the job as I've heard good things about them. Not bothered what it looks like - mine isn't much of a looker but I would have to see it work and you would be more than welcome to see mine work.

ATB
