cant go wrong with a GSD regarding the law as long as there is warning signs clearly stating there is a pissed off dog on the other side of the door and a intruder carries on then they are fair game. lucky for me my GSD carries a badge had a pole jump me fence raiding the shed for scrap opened the door to let the dog out for a piss to find the bloke screaming on the floor like a little girl with my bite trained GSD ragging his arm. i restrained him till police arrived dint question the fact that the dog ragged him because i had warning signs over the property.

ive got a whippet, will bark with anything at rear, side, or front of house 99% of the time, big enough to put anyone of, its only a vocal warning you need anyway or enough to put them off

I'm afraid that not quite correct mate. And as I mentioned earlier the new amendments to the dangerous dogs act will make life harder for dog owners, especially dogs that bite, even under exceptional circumstances. Sounds like the officer who visited yours had common sense......... The Guard Dogs Act 1975 originally governed guard dogs with stipulations regarding signs etc, but the 91 DD is now the benchmark often used when dealing with dogs that bite. As a general rule the police will not prosecute (from my experience) unless a dog bites a child/emergency person or has a history of aggression. But this all depends on the individual police authority and will only get worse as amendments to the DDA are introduced......

It depends what you want my sheppard was nuts no man could get through my gate including my mates but he suffered from seperation anxianty and barked at any person walking down the fence line if its a warning any dog that barks would do you need to take into account the new laws there bringing in. The sheppard I had was very protective of the other half and the kids. Or are you wanting a dog to look the part as a deterent if so any large dog would do also there were a spate of dogs being poisiond round my end too get access to a property as they tried with mine but it never took food off anyone but me or the family. Also trying to get a good sheppard its a hard job. Have you considered a amierican bull dog the ones iv met have had good natural guarding instincts and look the part

get a whippet mate that way u can work it to. the one of got is a good watchdog, its can be a pain though cause somthing might be going on 100 metres away and shell bark

Not hormonal lol, anyone whos spent any time around poultry wouldnt consider a gander a threat... Id see it and think mmm roast gander i wouldnt be thinking that its something to be scared of

collie x's can be mean sneaky feckers.........my 'jazz'is as nice and socialised dog as you'd find,doesn't even bark at the postie, the grandkids crawl all over her etc. everybody's pal...almost. she seems to suss who's dodgy, she's only shown a nasty side a few times in her 5 yrs.... the best example.....early morning half dark and i let her out for the toilet and she saw a guy the other side of our 6' fence behind the ferret hutch ...she went mental, no barking but a real serious sounding growl and snarling....she bounced off the fence a couple of times, tried to jump it, tried to chew a plank off, bounced off the fence again the guy shit himself and by the time i got round he was well gone....she was 'up' for maybe 40 minutes, heckles raised, mega alert.....i have no doubt if the fence hadn't been there she'd have done the guy for sure...........i know you'd need to suss the right lines but an intelligent, strong, fast 50 or 60lb hunting dog that knows how to use it's mouth is going to be a real detterent

I been had by my mukas collie x she loud as feck if sum1 down the round farts, I went in to grab me mates box n she had me, still got the mark where she pinn me. She gud as gold if he there just barks but that evil streak cums out if he aint lol I think it just how they raised me saluki's in yard are same

Though I'd 100% go with Simoman on his first post and go for a good quality alarm before any dog.

 

If it is a dog you need MOST lurchers will do an alarm/basic deterrent type job, though many would go a damn sight further if required.

 

Just about every type i've owned would guard to a greater or lesser extent, with some just plain 'ol nasty feckers themselves, especially those with collie blood, no need for exotic crosses!

 

If folk put a bit more faith in our Lurchers 'all round' ability's rather than getting yourself a big mean guard breed, you'd save yourself a whole lotta money, time & effort..!!
