get a burglar alarm you don't need to feed and exercise them daily and are a bit of a deterrent

If your looking for a dog that will deter a burglar I'd be looking at a german shepherd,doberman,rottweiler or something 'scary looking' along those lines.

If your looking something to just alert you a terrier is the way to go, mine barks even if there's someone 40 yards from the house the wee shite.

I wouldn't depend on any dog to attack them because some just don't have it in them and I'm not sure where you would stand legally if it did.

 

That being said a relative of mine had his garage broken into and his japanese akita didn't stop them.

 

I think once you've been stolen from its already to late. I think you should stick some CCTV up and if your still looking into dogs get a GSD or along those lines.

Suprisingly enough my labrador is a brilliant Deterant. The last thing you want is a dog that bites. My labrador lives at home with me in my dads pub and during the day he egnores all customers and you could trust him with a baby but at night after hours he barks at any noise. I wouldnt want anything unpredictable and id look at a breed I could get a little use out of too. Like a little terrier, lab or pointer etc not in my opinion a big scary slobbering dog with no purpose other than to deter people.

As somebody who used to spend a lot of time training sport/protection dogs I would say with the proposed changes to the DD act you would be better off investing in a security system as nowadays your more likely to end up in prison than the intruder.........

This is where I think the law goes a bit mad.

Just speaking as a female, when I was living alone in a house 3 years ago I had an attempted break in that was stopped by my neighbour who happened to be getting in from the pub at 3am and noticed the scrotes scoping out my house and dealt with them. If he hadn't of been there and say they had got in though, I'd of been fast asleep and god knows the what ifs. Ever since then I've wanted a dog to keep me company, a dog big enough to deter people and god forbid I had a break in and were trying to kill/rape me, big enough to bite their bloody face off. If somebody has broken into another persons house I'm my humble opinion they've left their human rights at the door.

 

However here in reality I know I'D be more likely to get more time than a rapist should a dog I owned try and protect me.

The law can be an ass at times. I always had a couple of shepherds around the kennels/house, and they were both very serious dogs, yet sociable too. Unfortunately the other thing is many people think a serious protection dog is easy to acquire, unfortunately they are like rocking horse sh*t, many look the part and make all the right noises but when push comes to shove they are left wanting. Getting a pure bred shepherd/rottie/malinois from working lines and it turning out a forceful protection/guard dog is hard work, getting a dual purpose lurcher is making life even harder........

My dad and I had a pup each from the same litter. I've taken mine to work with me every day and he is well socialised, but my dads has turned out the complete opposite. My dad lives in the middle of no where and the dog is out in the yard, his yard is separate to the house/ garden so no one has any business in the yard so if some one entered they wouldn't be leaving in one piece. So what I'm saying is some of it is how they are bought up.

I had a collie grey who was a great guard.

One night after a night on the sauce i decided to demonstrate my dog's fierceness to some mates.

I grabbed the mrs and pretended to give her a hiding.

The dog leapt to her defence and bit me on the lip and the arm requiring six stitches.

My mates thought it was the funniest thing they'd ever seen and my mrs still pisses herself laughing at the memory.

my keeper mate has just bred a litter of pressa canario x imported rottie bitch both parents are attack trained yet great round his kids he can turn them on and off like a lamp 1 minute there big freindly giants as soon as he say get him they turn into the devil as soon as he says relax you can go back to them and there brilliant freindly giants both work the sleave and both are great gaurddogs when you pull in the yard im having a bitch and my couisin is having the other bitch as there was only 2 bitches in the litter but there is 4 dogs for sale and only £150 each no money to stop theives taking your home or garden contents or even your working dogs had a lurcher took last year they wont be taking another 1 when i get this beast lol pm me if you want 1 pups were 3 weeks old yesterday
