Competitions At The Irish Game Fair

Recommended Posts

At pedigree shows Veterans are 7 years and over under English KC rules and 8 years and over under Irish KC rules, and yes as Albert has said both pups and veterans can compete in the final line up for Best of Breed.

I too think the Veterans should have their own class and then be allowed to compete for the overall champion/ best or breed at the working shows, especially at those where they class veterans as 6 years old or above - I currently have two 6 year old whippets who are 'in their prime' and can easily compete with the best of the youngsters, and a 9 year old who is as fit as a fiddle and in good hard condition who still gives the youngsters a run for their money!!

Veteran class for a lurcher should be at least 8 but more like 10 imo , there's plenty of older lurchers still in excellent shape and some what would show some younger ones up in the field ..

if that club are running the racing il not be at it. they dont no the difference between a lurcher and a greyhound and now a greyhound has won the lurcher race set up for real lurchersto stop cheating

Think the same should be said for whippets a 6-7 year old should be in good enough nick to go into the dog or bitch class

Exactly Tracey if your dogs can compete in with the young ones why do we need to have them in the veteran class why not simple have a dog class not agruing just a friendly debate excuse the spelling on the mobile eyes are not working too well in sunlight this screen is hard to see

Chid,

thanks for putting forward a point of view on lurchers which is where we came in as only the lrchers had a veteran class because someone asked for it. This year there was a request for Whippet & Terrier Veteran classes and I feel it is good to see some of the older dogs including some of the more famous ones as well as the 'lasters'. I am happy to take views on this for lurchers, terriers and whippets but I feel it should certainly be 7 plus.

Now we have the puppy and veterans out of the mix on to the pairs should it not be a pair of dogs biches that are kennaled and hunt work together rather than two lurchers whippets that are alike and owened by different people.

It is definitly not the case Albert I for one and people like me have two whippets which double up on the lamp ferreting and are caged together look nothing like each other But are beat because there is folk that take litter mates which are simlar into the ring which are owned by different people.

Made what I hope will be the FINAL changes to the classifications with ALL veteran classes now for dogs over 7 years of age and Whippet , Terrier and Lurcher Pairs to be from the same ownership. When I have judged Pairs ( or brace classes ) in the past I looked for how alike or matched the pairs, their conformation and how well they moved together - hopefully as one .

Can I suggest you come early to Shanes Castle or leave one day free for going round the fair. We have an exceptionally good quality trade stand base this year and three arenas. The focus is very definitely a 'Game Fair' one with a huge number of attractions including the 'WOODCOOK & SALMON PAVILION' and our FLAVOUR FINE FOOD PAVILION which includes cookery demos by award winning chef Emmett Mc Court - featuring all manner of rabbit dishes as well as his normal game & fish dishes. In addition to Emmett we have a good range of other chefs. This will undoubtedly be the best FINE FOOD PAVILION at any Irish Game Fair this year and of course we have some excellent fine food stands in our other pavilions including PETER GOTT from Silfield Farm with his game pies, wild boar pies, sausages and bacon - his Herdwick Cumbrian lamb etc Time is running out for people to make application to me for a Two days for one ticket but in the hard copy of the Irish Countrysports and country life magazine , in the shops next Wed. There is a voucher for £10 off the price of a couple or family admission.

The classifications we will be using are as above. As stated elsewhere on the forum anyone can make a formal complaint on depositing £40 which will be returned if the complaint is upheld or forfeited to a chairty of my choice. We will not consider any complaints which are not made on the day of the event. Anyone found cheating or judged to be cheating will be disqualified and banned from our events for a period of up to three years.

Albert if a complaint is made accusing a person running an lurcher as an unregistered whippet .

What happens then is the person in question offered the chance of proving the breedind of the dog in question ?

Or is up to to the complaintive to prove it is not whippet

I suppose what I am asking is .Is it case of guilty until proved inocent ?

.Or inocent until proved guilty ?

Sammy

The Tally Ho Dog Show and Raceday Saturday 3rd May 2025
As 7am on Saturday morning 3rd May 2025 rang out loud and clear in our house, I crawled out of bed and thanked god for allowing me another day on this beautiful landscape of ours called the Emerald Isle. With the joys of spring in my heart, Mr Fox away on his summer holidays, the work in the field completed for another season, it was show time again on this side of our Island.
Suddenly the seasons were telling me it was Tally Ho show time of the year again and time to get our Canine friends in the show ring and on the race course, for the start of the summer Dog show and Race Days schedule.
Some of us have had joyous occasions in our families since the last showing season, and some of us may have had great sadness, as fate can throw all sorts of problems in the pathway of life. As we dusted ourselves down after our winter woes, Saturday was a day to leave all our cares of yesterday behind and head to Crumlin for  the Tally Ho  annual dog show and race day.  And what a days enjoyment with our loyal Canine friends that was.
The weather was beautiful, but tinged with an east wind that would cut you in two. As we approached the field, we could see very clearly there was very little parking space left. Each year this show grows bigger and better. Peter Morgan being the caring gentleman he is made sure he kept a parking space for the now 2 senior citizens and of which we were very grateful.
By midday the field was full to capacity.  In the show rings there was a big turnout and a great mix of top quality dogs in all categories. 22 races and 28 children in child handling class.
As I moved around the rings, I met up with some old friends and some new ones too. Michael Reilly travelled up all the way from Tipperary. Yapper Hayes came up from Kilkenny and Stephanie O Connor and family and Mc Grath Family travelled up from Carlow.  All great doggie people and support every show and race day North and South of the border.
Stands were situated around the show ground. Paul Boyd with loads of canine supplies/ Alannah Harpur and her sister with some beautiful Tea Shirts and Mugs and Mary Kate Quinn was there with her amazing art work . What an interesting and talented lady to speak to. There was a burger stand on site and 4 toilets dotted all around the field.
Our children as usual were well cared for by the Tally Ho show organiser Peter Morgan, both in the ring and outside it. Two bouncy castles were on site and inside the ring were trophys, medals and big bags of sweets for every child. A real childrens paradise. Some sleepy we people on Saturday night.
Time waits for nobody. The moment had arrived after the long cold winter to get our Canine friends out of the field and into the show ring and on the Race course.

And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. I must not forget the man at the helm of this top show day. Peter Morgan your hospitality, excellent show and race day, magnificent trophies and prizes, your generosity  knows no bounds. I can honestly say our lives have been enriched with the excellent work and enjoyment you give to many families North and South of the border through your dog show on the day.
Peter we all look forward to your shows as they brighten up our darkest days and brings us away from the trials and tribulations of life, if only for a day. Your show is a credit to you for a one man band, along with all the time and energy you put into them to give us all a great days enjoyment.
Thank you for your friendship over the years and please do not stop running your shows. Yours in Country Sports to we meet again, God Bless.
