What We Do To Land That Fish

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Like last Saturday I decided to have another go at those brownies on the upper river and try two pools I had seen but hadn't tried. Again I used freelined lobworm and felt for bites as I trickled the worm in the swims. First pool I settled in and I lost the first fish of the session, so re-cast and caught one of just over twelve inches and so a taker. Tried a couple more snaggy swims as I worked my way up to the second pool. On this one the banks were steep ten footers surrounded by fresh waist high nettles. With overhanging trees it was a struggle getting a cast in but when I finally did it was only twenty seconds before I felt the line pull tight. That's when the fun started, with the overhanging trees I couldn't get the rod up to get the fish into the net on the telescopic pole, and seeing the fish I wasn't prepared to lose it so took the rather foolhardy action of sliding down the bank to it. I managed to stop sliding any further once I was up to my knees in the river. Got the fish in the net and then had to spend the next ten minutes trying to get back up and not sliding right down into the river, after many up and downs and thankfully digging out a vole hole to use as a foothold I was out.

Had the larger trout for tea tonight and it fed all four of us and like last weeks it was lovely. It was good to see that its stomach was full of signal crayfish legs.

There is still loads of unfished sections of this river to try but next time I may go in company to get out of tricky situations.

Chris.
