Guest CharlieC
read the comments on this thread and see what you guys think I was pretty appalled when I read it. My faith in chips is not what it once was due to more and more cases like this arising, so I now tattoo all my dogs/pups as well as chip them so they are doubly identifiable and traceable. http://www.doglost.co.uk/forum.asp?ID=3741
MikeTheDog 153
Fecking unbelievable!.....What does one have to do to be sure of getting a dog back?...tattoo your name and address on its belly for all to see!
Guest Doug
Bummer if you move house, though, Mike Seriously, that's a bad do - wonder if they'd try that one with a stolen car?
Garypco 3
Thats unbelievable Charlie,i work as a dog warden, and scan dogs every day, have returned a lot of dogs to their owners, its amazing that this has been overlooked at the end of the day if a dog is chipped and the details are correct, then that dog is legaly the property of the owner,i get a lot of dogs chipped with wrong information tho,it costs a small fee to change any information, just contact petlog,i know petlog wont give information out to the public,i as a dog warden have a pin no,and can only get information using that no,maybee if they had informed the local dog warden he could have sorted it,i know i wouldnt have left something like this lie,the police have a duty of care to return property,so i think complaints should be made there, altough i deal with the police every day and when it comes to dogs they're crap!!!,at the moment they are waiting for the new clean neighbour hoods and enviroment act to come in,it removes their duty of care as far as dog laws are concerned, although dog theft is still a serious crime,i would'nt let this put people off micro chipping dogs though,as this has gotta be an isolated incident, and at the end of the day,if a dog does go missing then a chip usually guarantees the dogs return sometimes with a fine quite often without, but it generaly saves time spent in the pound, which in itself costs less in fines,if anyone lives not to far from the carmarthenshire area and wants their dogs chipped,im working inconjunction with the dogs trust and can chip dogs free at the moment, just mail me and il arrange to meet or make a visit...... Guest CharlieC
Your right enough Gary people should still have their dogs chipped, but it just goes to show they are not infallible. I dont think any method is, sadly
Guest MOLLY
Cant believe it ended up PTS Got mine chipped and tattoed, was in the local vets and they were checking a dog for a chip on the neck, the owner was there so they knew it was chipped. They couldnt find it and were about to re-chip it when i said it might be a good idea to try the shoulder region as i can feel on one of my dogs has slipped and they found it. But fancy them not knowing they move Plus whenever ive handed dogs into police station they have never yet looked inside their ears for tattoos Im gonna print off a flyer for the local police staions advising them how to look for ID on a dog, cos it might be one of mine one day! Nipper 0
A friend of mine once lost his lurcher and rang the local police station to report it missing. The female PC took the details and told him that their kennels were empty. He then rang the local dog warden who he knows and he told him he was on his way to collect a dog matching that description from that police station reported to him by that female pc two hours ago!! My mate went down and collected his lurcher after making a scene.......... It turns out that the woman just couldn't be arsed with stray dogs and their owmers and the paperwork involved........lazy cow!!

MOLL. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I agree molly, sometimes chips do move,i've found them in dogs, shoulders, legs,on their backs, chest area's even had a greyhound once with a chip on the side of its foot,im interested in tattooing, also the guys in oz/nz freeze brand,if an org was set up here maybee that would be worth a go,once again the police just dont care they have procedure and dont follow it,i've just started something in my authority were we gonna restructure the way things are done, because mistakes are being made all the time...Gary... Guest Dave
My horse is freeze branded, never heard of any one doing it to dogs over here though. Dave
Guest CharlieC
my wee cuddy is freezemarked and microchipped - I beleive you can also get foot branding where a code is stamped into the hoof, but obviously this needs to be done more than once to allow for hoof growth. Guest CharlieC
I havent had a change of heart, I still reccommend people have their dogs chipped as well as tattooed. If you tie the chip and tattoo together it helps prove ownership of the dog slightly better than a microchip or tattoo alone. The reason for this is because the law is an absolute ass :realmad: and basically when you register a chip, you are registering ownership of the chip, rather than the dog it is implanted inside (yes I know its completely f*****g mad ) and a tattoo alone is not infallible as in extremely rare cases ears can be removed and tattoos can be altered. I reccommend having both ears tattooed, and a microchip, and maybe even some kind of branding using Millets suggestion ( the last part was a joke by the way :11: ) so lest anyone think Im saying dont chip, I am not! there are thousands of success stories of reunification involving chips, its just sad to see the cases like this where things arent quite so clear cut black and white

Guest Lurcherbitch
Please, please, please get your dog's chipped, i ALWAY'S scan them & am very aware that chips migrate. If your dogs are chipped and ends up in my rescue...you'll get it back .
Guest CharlieC
I never said I was the best microchipper in the world, I said none of my microchips that I have implanted have moved, that is a whole lot different to a dog being PTS by a rescue because of complications with the Data protection act. I also never said I was the best tattooist in the world, what I did say was that the NDTR guy came to do my pups years ago and didnt do a very good job, two dogs had to be re-done and I ended up deciding to do them myself because I reckoned I could do a better job, so far I havent had to re-do any tattoos either. If you want to get bitchy then send me a PM, if you actually have a point to make that is :11: :11:
