'ol Stripe...

i think back in the 70s and 80s it was just lurcher to lurcher, and a lurcher was just that nothing fancy really, (although the straw coloured norfolk lurcher type were very nice) then due to books and folks like plummer and hancock amongst others, it became very fashionable to own dogs with fancy percentages in there breeding rather than worker to worker and named dogs, so long as it was fancy percentages that was all well and good, lol , never mind what they were bred off, it had to sound a good percentage, :icon_eek:

i think/hope its come back around now, that most people realise, that percentages dont mean much at all, and what counts is working ability or ability of parent stock to produce good workers

100% with that last post Jerry...

Only 'some' go on to be producers and more importantly, folk have been far too concerned about percentages (fractions) than 'ability' for too long an thats a factor to why so much shite is being bred these days.

As I put before and I'm as guilty of it as any, one reason why Stripe never lined anything is that we all just took him for granted, the little ugly mutt that just soldiers on when all these film star types with 'percentages' were getting all the lime-light and attention.

It's only when you take a look in the rear view mirror that you realise how much a dog like him has done and how much he's put those others to shame.

At least 3 times he's been 'critical' with injurys, I remember Seargent, the vet in North Wales, looking in horror and saying 'I don't know how this dog is still alive' but that night he never quit on the quarry he had hold of and it was only when we got him back to the motor we realised how bad he was. Funny though, he's never been a dog to have 'niggle injurys', his feet are all wrong but he's never knocked a toe!!

Sane and sensible words there lads..

Fractions, equations and mathamatical formuli,..are possibly nessesary to create some scientific end product,...but in general,..the terms, half cross, three quarter bred, Three Eights Five eights, etc,...would seem to be the ideal and easily understood creations, of the professional breeder and seller of dogs...

Nothing wrong with that, but for some lads, it can become obsessional....

Only yesterday,.in a quest for the truth,.... ..I was chatting to a fellow that has known of me, for at least thirty years,.... :thumbs:Hopefully,..we sorted a few things out,...and it was good to talk openly about certain subjects..

One thing that was evident ,was that, back in the day, there was never any thought given to the concept of genuine half crosses ,..we just put the best dog we had to a decent bitch,..and hoped against hope that something decent would emerge..Hardly very scientific,.foolhardy perhaps,.but, you know what,.we ended up with some real good hearted, hunting jukels.

Old Stripe is typical of those good old days,....and since then I have gone down the accepted route of breeding from carefully measured portions of this,.put over a required amount,.. of that,...and you know what,..I ain't had a top quality dog in fecking decades..

Admitedly,.my standards are not as high as most,.but hopefully,.if all goes well,.I will soon have a litter of wee rabbiting/mouching curs to keep me and my pals happy,... and if anyone does ask me to work out the exact fractions of the pups,..I'll just hand them a fecking big calculator

All the best,..CHALKWARREN...
