Guest SJM
My advice to you would be to go to someone who works their dogs, it can make all the difference. Like anything in life there is no guarantees, but worker to worker gives you a better chance My bitch pup is off working stock and is much more fiery than the dog was at that age. He is off pot lickers/show stuff and he will get stuck into rats quite happily but wasnt interested when he saw his first fox in fact he was scared of it I got both of them for rabbiting and ratting so Its not the end of the world, but the bitch was interested in a rag and she is only about 7 months old. Some people say they are slower to mature, this could be true, or it could be to do with their laid back temperament compared to other terriers?? but if you are wanting a digging border then you need to buy one off digging parents as most terriers will do rabbits and rats. marko 30
yes have had a few borders myself bringing a pup on at the mo she is 9 mths old some take longer than others but perseverence is the key with these intelligent little dogs they sulk if they dont get there way, however very quiet not as vocal as patts or jrts and not what some people would get each to there own i suppose cracking little dogs though with plenty of character there may be someone on here who can put you in the right direction most borders will happily work rats/rabbits as already said but getting a fox dog a bit harder to aquire good luck. Heres a quote that should get a good response! the name is Cunningham Rice, comments please, if you need directions for a genuine worknig border terrier breeder, who works their terriers (not to rat or rabit) and will not charge you hundreds of pounds, get your pen and paper ready, mention my name, the best time to call him is around December, if you want to write to him I suggest you write in November because he may be to busy or have no pups left, my 8 year old daughter left it until December and missed out, never stopped crying and had to wait until next year, never made the same mistake she sent a letter in September and got what she asked for. Unfortunatly I did not have a email address for him then but I have been given his email now. Sorry for dragging on, I know you are excited with the anticipation of actually getting the contact details of a genuine terrierman and geting a border pup First class mail only, address: Mr Santa Claus, LAP LAND - email: santa.miracleborderwish.co.lapland If you have any problems there try the moon! Tally Ho BUT DONT FORGET RESPONSES TO CUNNINGHAM RICE Tally Ho! Quote Link to post
redrob... 0
you could try any of the breeds that have an affix, they work them week in and week out. or as said try for a pup from someone that is trying to keep what work is left in them going. Quote Link to post

redmoor 0
Why are some people so down on working Borders? Quote Link to post
nelson 0
Because they aren't black, have smooth a coat, bull head and don't grunt all the time. It wouldn't make an ounce of difference if a Border was dug to every day of it's life, those who have decreed it worhtless will alway's say that. Just as i have said that the thick headed, deep chested, smooth "terrier" ( loosely attached to the terrier world by its bull & terrier ancestory) is a waste of my kennel space. Good luck to those who try and work them but deep down we all know they aren't the real deal. Bull & Terrier out crosses that is. Quote Link to post

redrob... 0
i dont think every one is so down on working borders, a good working border is as good as any other type to fox, what i think pissis some, not all people is the bullshit. when i first got the book the world of the working terrier and read the chapter on the border terrier i was gutted, but the author [to me] is right, worker to worker every time, theres quite afew on here that agree with putting worker to worker so are they all wrong? and if anyone thinks they are please tell them, borders are being churned out by so called top kennels for fame and glory and not for working ability, is it any wonder diggin lads take the piss out of them. as far as im concerned the show people wrecked the working border once they got there greedy mits on them.thankfully there are afew that do breed for work and not fame and fortune. nuv 2
Mine work, and work well. Why doesn't anybody here make a fuss of the Bob Clough/Kevin Allen/Parson terrier not working or being KC registered? Or the £500 price tag? Why dig out Borders? Yes, Plummers are shit, but nobody has ever taken them seriously anyway. Gould this, Nuttall that. Total wank. Black 'uns. Red 'uns. This line, that line. Breeding alone won't make the dog. Guest SHOT
id try a border nuv but as long as i can get two black..red pups what ever and have more litters to choose from for the price of a border and still have change, its never going to happen,i think you might be one of the few nuv but of the 3 lads ive come across that said they dug to there borders regular two had litters on,when i enquired both wanted £400 a pop digging home or not .just too much money to drop for some breeders and theres no shortage of muppets to pay it. seems to be getting that way with black dogs now... the amount of lads on here that want £200 a pup and more, not thinking about the dogs at all. nelson 0
I have to agree with Shot, i have a Border, went to ground to fox at 10 month's old, came out after 5 or so minutes and her litter sister went straight after her. I was talking about the incident with the bloke i got her off in the week, nearly 9 years ago the other day. My bitch's mother was forward, so they say, for a Border, working her first fox at 14 month, my bitch and her litter sister both "worked" their first foxes around this age as well. At the time i had a Border dog, big strong, powerful head and stupid, he was also at it early and never gave ground. I had 2 litters out of this bitch of two pups a time, two out of four pup's went to supposed working homes, one went to a pet home and is absolutely barking and known in the village for worrying everything it gets near, i consider it a badge of honour The pups were sold for the same price i paid for mine. So whats my point I paid £250 pound for each of those dogs, a lot i thought and could have got another worker for much less, however, i would never have to buy another dog for life...............wrong, the dog is now dead and the bitch missed the last time it was mated. I have a black bitch from a friend for a small fee and she is cock on. I like my Border's but to be honest have to cringe when i see how much folk want for a "working Border terrier".It doesn't end there though, i was at a show this summer and a terrierman for some hunt or other told me he would charge as much as possible for a pup if people were daft enough to pay it, took me back a bit as i though people like him would be happy to see there tackle go to proper homes. Thing is, we all will get ripped off for things, feckin diesel for a kick off, but as long as we are prepared to pay, the price will be high. You cannot appeal to a greedy c*nts conscience, they don't have one. So if you want what they have, you have to pay and all that will happen is in years to come, no one except those people who are prepared to help each other HONESTLY and breed for the good of the worker will have good stock, whether it be Border, Russel, or Fell type/ Patterdale. Back to my old mate, if he was starting out, there is no way he would pay ££££££££££ for a Border, yes some are good dog's, yes some are cracking looking and they do make good yard dogs / pets BUT ££££££££££ for a working dog.................absolutely not and that goes for ALL of the working breeds.registered or not, there are still good working pedigrees held by GENUINE people out there. I put a post on somewhere saying i would GIVE any pups i had out of my bitch to working homes only, i had a reply of a contributor, thanks matey, but found someone closer to me and used his dog, my bitch never took so i couldn't honour those promises, my only interest being the working of the breed and the continuation of the line of working Border before it is too late. Silly b'stard i hear you say and your probably right, your looking at giving a "K" away to perfect strangers and your right, Giving away pups to "perfect strangers", only they want to work these pups eventually. So now, i have another litter planned and they will be going to working homes or they will be going nowhere, i only intend covering the cost of rearing and registration, the potential owners know who they are and they will get what they want with a bit of luck. These dogs are in our hands at the moment, they are ours to lose, and at the moment all i can see is LOSERS selling out the breed and breeds to whoever is prepared to pay through the nose. Border or not. Quote Link to post
Guest WILF
IMHO.......its people such as post on this site, with there fecking websites where any c@nt can go and buy a border (as long as you are carring 400 sovs) that will feck up your borders quicker than anything..........its them that are the true enemy of your working borders. As I say.......JMHO Quote Link to post
