Out With The '77

Recommended Posts

I've been concentrating on keeping fit for the last few weeks and been out running every other night so shooting has temporarily taken a back seat.

After a ligament injury on Monday I decided to take it easy and have a stroll with the HW77K on my local permission. I haven't used the '77 for a few months since getting my .17HMR so I was looking forward to getting out with the springer. I haven't bagged anything to date with the HMR so for the moment at least, the air rifle still rules king.

I sat against a hedgerow and watched a young 1/4 grown rabbit for a while, around 50 yards away. Deciding not to attempt to shoot this one due to it's small size I used the opportunity to judge the wind direction and strength and let things settle after my arrival.

After 15mins or so I made my way into the next meadow. The grass in this one was a good 10 inches and is being left to be bailed. Spotting a rabbit in here would be a challenge and to top it off it was very windy.

I made my way down a hedgeline using the wind to my advantage in both masking my scent and any noise I made until I spotted what looked like the tips of a rabbit's ears. A quick check through the scope confirmed my suspicions. I closed the distance to what I thought was around 30 yards and from a kneeling position lined up the shot and squeaked my lips. A head soon followed, just above the grass line, and a squeeze of the rekord trigger sent the 16 grain Air Arms Field on it's way.

The aim was true but suprisingly the rabbit backflipped twice, something which has only ever happened a handful of times in all the years I've been shooting. A quick reload and skip over found the rabbit stone dead and on closer inspection the shot was placed perectly behind the eye.

After dressing the rabbit I offered it to the landowner who gratefully took it and in return offered me a selection of 'vegetable plugs' from his commercial plot and pollytunnels. Bargain! I was planning on spending £50 kitting out my newly created garden plot.. I pick them up next week; it certainly pays to keep your landowners happy lads
