New Ess Pup Concern

Recommended Posts

Bitch pup 10 week old. Out of a litter of 5, all others dogs. She is a skinny thing, a lot smaller than her siblings. Doesnt eat well. Giving her 3 meals a day but can turn her nose up and not bother without some encouragment from me to eat.

Her mother is a thin dog but am comcerned shes not 'thriving' as her brothers obviously are. Has been wormed and had first jab. Am i flapping for no reason ?

hi had the same prob with a sprocker pup last week and I blended her food up with a bit of goats milk and she ate a lot more of her food then, shes fine now. I soaked puppy nuts in boiling water for 20min and added milk and then blitzed till like mushy Weetabix. Hope this helps mate.

Yes WB, have already soaked the food but shes still not got much of an appetite for it. I guess it will involve putting in a bit more time with her and getting it right. Shes a lovely dog and never had this problem before.

There are some dogs/ESS who just don't put weight on, this is ok in one way as long as they are not really thin, but should they fall ill then they wont have the energy or weight to fight it.

You can always just use a better food if your really concerned even a good raw meat would be ok, if you go to Tesco and get their value mince mix it with some puppy food and small amount of hot water it may work, also cook a chicken and mix it, it is important that the vitimins in puppy food is given, but the down side is once you have the weight on she will like mince and chicken and wont go back easily to dog food, be careful you don't bulk her out with cr@p, whilst if you made a mix of Weetabix and she eats it, you think good but its fills her tummy with something that's not really needed.

maybe add another feed so its 4 times a day

Cheers Phil, she was on weetabix on a morning but knocked it on the head last week. She's on Beeta puppy at the minute and will see how we go the next few days. If no progress will think about introducing a mince feed. Appreciate the input.

try a bit of green tripe have yet to see a dog turn it down plus you only need a wee bit then once she s took to it get it mixed through her normal grub plus if it dont put a back on her nothing will tho keep her wormed regular if you do decide to go for the tripe

Food intake is the first thing effected by stress mainly in sensitive dogs , sensitive / nervy dogs get greatly disturbed when left in boarding kennels the first thing to go is the apatite because they are functioning on instinct which is fear based and if we pin point a place its in the head that means it is only eating at the minute when the pressure to eat from the gut overwhelms the fear based instinct in its head

Put it this way you could take one of the dominant breeds Akita ,Rottweiler and take him out of his comfortable environment throw down a pot of food down and he will eat like a lord because inside he feels in control his apatite won't suffer, at no stage will he not feel good about himself he feels like a predator, on the other hand a sensitive pup taking out of its environment will feel more like a prey animal who feed when pressured to eat by its gut because it feels fear all around

Let the pup settle in , don't make a huge fuss over it by doing so you are only adding more pressure onto the pup , hand feed it gets the pup comfortable in your space , gradually as the instinct subsides the apatite will increase but don't crowd it let the make its own approaches ,

it's not the food that the problem it's the nature of the pup that needs to be groomed to success, nobody every tamed a robin overnight. Best of luck

  • 2 weeks later...

time consuming but i would be doing scrambled duck eggs for breakfast wheetabix for dinner then pup food at t time,,give it a try worked for me

She is 100 percent better now. Encouraged her then knocked one of her feeds on the head. Down to 2 feeds a day and she is a different dog. Just a slow starter I'm guessing but pleased with her progress now. Worse than bloody kids they are !!!!!

Good to hear but don't be too quick to drop that third feed what is she now 12 wks still a baby and will be going out into the wide world soon using more energy so if she is light that will burn that off.

Dunno about kids bit never wanted any, had dogs all my life and if you have a bad one you can shoot it, I don't think that's allowed with kids..

Yes Phil 12 weeks now. She gets a bit of food at supper time when I put her in the kennel as well and it seems to be working for her.
