I always used to roll my own bait, me and my mate would split the cost and the work between us. Saved us some serious money over several seasons. I always had a lot of good fish on either maple8 or the Green lipped muscle (man it stank).

Years ago I was a member of a certain fishery in the Dartford area, that place opened my eyes in more ways than just the way bait was applied I can tell you.

I sat in disbelief as several members arrived, set-up, got the rods out and then proceeded in clubbing together to roll kilos and kilos of bait between them. They had all the paraphernalia with them too and finished off by boiling it on their stoves. Once cooled they were pumping it into their swim and then proceeded in starting the procedure all over again. Like I said, never seen anything like it before or since.

Surface fishing for carp is an alien method for.... maybe 99.9% of the blokes who are fishing for them, im very glad to be able to say!

Due to one thing and another, my fishing time isnt much, thats the way it is and will probably be like that for a couple more years , BUT when the days are long and warm fishing of the top is what does it for me.

 

I went to a commercial lake recently to meet a lad there, he and the owner mentioned surface fishing like it was alien! LOL. So got me thinking to blagging a few visits but some stone weighted pva bags full of 'stuff' will be in my pocket when I am in the area next! & theres 50lb + carp in there imagine the back on them appearing out of the water heading towards your freebies!!!!!!!

On the subject of french imports, these grey fish dont appeal to me, never mind what weight they are.

Interesting reading this....just looked on flea bay and seen the new rolling tables got one when they very first came out in the eighties,was horrendous to use ended up buying some of the "pliers"that had a cup on each side to press boilies one at a time all night making 1kg of bait can remember my mam going mental at the stench of "Ultra spice"...in the house for days

That is a blast from the past, some of those original flavours did me well. Some of them were ultra bird spice, grange, scopex, white chocolate and of course strawberry. I had a good few sessions on carp company's nut mix and HBS's indian spice. Are HBS still going? as I always liked their products although a bit pricey.

Not got a clue Pat....Scopex...now that's a blast from the past got a bit disillusioned with carp fishing years ago and pretty much packed it in,but was keen as mustard in the eighties...20 mile bike ride (with all the gear for 3or4 days )Christ the thought of it knackers me now we used to climb a chain link fence get on a barge roof and tip buckets of hemp the length of the barge and fish boilies over the top of it ,done 10+carp in one night many times,then the matchmen would arrive at 8am "you wont catch owt on boilies,they don't know what they are,you need luncheon meat!" oh right thanks mate well bring some next time

Just got myself 10kg of boiled bait sorted for £50 delivered, it's a mixture of all the over rolls from a bait company so mainline, nutrabaits etc in all different sizes, shapes and smells.........should be cock on as I bet not many folk are using boiled bait like that on most waters.

 

£5 a kilo lets you use it correctly too, you can't use boiled bait correctly at £10 a kilo it's too expensive

 

I used to use mainline because I got it at field testers rates of £6 but to be honest I don't give a monkeys what I use as long as I can apply it correctly and not have to take out a mortgage to do it!!

HBS are still going but Ian sold the company a few years back, im still using HBS Red Indians

Forgive me if this sounds thick but what's the difference between a 50lbs French carp and a 50 lbs English carp???? Surly not the accent! That's racist lol

To some, none at all mate, to me plenty.........it a little like saying what's the difference between fishing a lake packed full of " fish farm" type carp and a big low stocked lake with old fish.

 

One holds a lot of satisfaction in any capture and one holds none at all

 

Like all forms of hunting, the hunt is almost more important than the kill

 

French carp have merit in the capture.......in France !!

I fished the Medway around the Maidstone stretch around the late 80's till the early 90's and had plenty of quality hard fighting fish up to the mid 20's, these were fish that most people wouldn't have believed possible to capture let alone existed in their local river on their doorstep. Probably some of the best times I ever had, very little money and had to use bait very carefully due to lack of funds. We would strip the trees for hemp, elderberry and tares when available and use just a few choppies mixed in with a boilie hook bait.

Even our tackle was useless but our line and end rigs was where it really counted, we even slept in the open with sod all weather protection, I wouldn't change a minute of it or swap it for the opportunity to catch imported carp. These fish although not big by todays standards were huge to us and had never been captured before. Probably the biggest buzz I had up to that point in my life, it would take some beating still.

Unfortunately, like everything it came to an end as carping became more wide spread and all types were turning up with top notch equipment and buckets and buckets of bait.

I still don't think they got anywhere near our catch rate.

God I miss those days. lol

Quite right mate,in those days you felt like youd achieved the impossible by catching a carp of any size,all you have to do now it seems is turn up and the 30s,40s and 50s are inevitable it really has lost its magic for me one of the final nails in the coffin for me was catching an upper double one day and some guy walked round told me it was 18+ and was called Sally before it was even in the sling....."the day the music died" for me
