I'm not long in after picking a full carrier bag of it,i've found a lot on a old airfield near me but allotments can be worth a look over and look around the edges of the whole plot as the plots are the bits that get cleared of it and the edges are left, last year any i found i pulled up and replanted in plastic window boxes with wire mesh over the top and when the birds ate one down i'd swap it for a fresh one and the old one would grow again, the mesh stops the bird from killing the plant by eating it to much. You can buy seeds on line and grow your own if it gets to hard to find mate.

i had 5 canaries when i was 15, got them from me dads mates, bloke next door used to keep birds an he told me to pick the chick weed and feed it to em, he was right they loved it, day after i put the 1st lot the lot were dead, i was gutted to say the least.

to this day i still think it was the chick weed but near enough every bird man i know feeds it without issues.

got a feeling the pesticide comment above is relevant

If they where not used to eating green's i wonder if it caused a build up of gas in there gut's..i had a bit of trouble when i started feeding one of my canaries on broccoli..it looked unhealthy and it kept getting a messy vent..so i was advised to put oyster shell grit in coated with granulated charcoal and it solved the problem more or less instant..

could well be, i was fairy green round the gills at the time, as you are at that age. put me off havin birds again, well that and the pigeons f*****g off on me never to be seen again after i'd built me pen and dotted on em for 6 months, 1st time i let the fuckers up, sat on the back doorstep for 8 hrs rattling a tin of corn, old man had to pysically remove from the step and put me to bed, it'd been dark 2 hrs!!! lol

i've got a mate breeding some goldie/linnet mules this year, i'm thinking of havin one off him, trouble is i know it wont end there once i get started....

its only since i've been coming and nosing in this section that my intrest has been coming back, could be expensive

Charcoal is a good bung upper but it also pulls goodness out a bird as equaly as badness so it's good to use a probiotic after using it,the chickweed that killed your birds may have had a dog wee on it as this'll make a bird very ill if not kill it as well as sprays. As it goes chickweed will grow stronger and thicker if it's got to push it's way up through other plants, hence why when you find a lot of it together it's thick and bushy rather than spread out across the ground like when it's on it's own.One thing is it sure ain't called CHICKweed for nothing and makes a difference when used even on adult birds  ,johan if your interested in getting started i'm sure a few of us can help you out and get you going with some birds that won't break the bank  but it's breeding time and most of our birds are nesting so get a set up all sorted over the summer and once the moult has been done we'll help you out with some young un's
