Ideation 8,216
I was just reading a thread in the ferreting section, and some one mentioned that accurate marking was very important in a ferreting dog and many decent dogs were let down by the lack of it. Now. . . . I totally agree on it's importance. But as of yet, I have not come across a dog that hunts with us that has not ended up being a good marker. Including - Whippet. Bull x. Collie x. Beddy x. GSD x. Hound. Terriers. So my question is.. . . . . has anyone seen / had a dog that just would not or could not mark stuff to ground accurately, that was given opportunity? paulus 26
that would depend if the dogs owner is able to recognize that the dog is marking as they might all mark differently from scratching at the hole to sitting by it to pointing. But like most things repetition will hone the dogs skills, however i have seen dogs false mark usually when the occupant has escaped from a bolt hole unseen. Quote Link to post
R.A.W 1,987
i've seen dogs encouraged to mark too much only to find it false marking when it did. paulus your spot on mate all my dogs mark in there own style. ive been out a few times when one dog will mark a bury and others won't only for the roles to revers on the next hole . KittleRox 2,147
Paulus makes a good point, my collie cur can be very subtle at times but the whippet is easy to read Quote Link to post

pip1968 2,490
i think when you encourage a dog to mark thats were the mistakes start,if you leave the dog alone and dont say a word the dog will let you know if theirs something there ie it might be in a bush or in a hole 2 Quote Link to post

Hot Meat 3,109
Its easy to test a dogs mark. Ether drop a fitch in or walk upto one a them burrows we all know where the bunnys will sit out until you aproach watch what hole they go down and then watch the dogs reactions at that hole. Nowt difficult about it really Quote Link to post
