Ideation 8,216
I think the only argument can be that in areas where there are not that many hares, you will kill off the population far quicker on the lamp then in the day, but no where near as quickly as the lads with guns. Animals like the hare are f****d anyway, so many people hunting them, in so many ways, day and night, summer and winter, combined with the change in agriculture and climate, and increase in certain types of predators. I don't have a problem with folk doing them day or night, makes no odds, as both can be done in a respectful and not respectful manner in my eyes. But going out for numbers night after night usually ends up with a lack of Hares to run one day. 3 Quote Link to post

wirral countryman 2,110
I think when we all start off as youngsters we will run anything on the lamp or daytime but as you gather some experience and realise that once them hares your running will not be replaced because of an ever diminishing population (hares), they are not like rabbits that have holes to breed in and replace themselves every 6 weeks or so,they have young that live above ground that get churned up,ploughed, rolled and even cut up by modern farming methods, their only defence is their pace or to lie up in woods and hedgerows during the day, when coursing was allowed we had the keepers on estates that looked after them as much as their pheasies and partridge, without that protectionyou can wipe out area's in no time by lamping them, regardless as to whats been said hares are far easier on the lamp and once they're gone they're gone.During the years up to the ban most lads would chance a few runs out the car or sneak on their local estate to test their dog on a good winter hare, that was the measuring stick for every decent lurcherman, now you can kid yourself that they're just as good on the lamp but you will never convince us lads that ran fast dogs of it,there is a set of rules for all forms of hunting, they are not always written down like the seasons etc but are still abided by unless its pest control,a good winter hare is a lurchermans ultimate test and it would be a shame if they were wiped out by second rate dogs on the lamp,WM 1 Quote Link to post
