bigdaz 688
Is a lurcher good because of its blood line or is it because of the time that as been put into trainning it as a pup. Can a pup from crap parents be made into a all round hunting machine. ? To the first question, both. To the second, yes. Quote Link to post

3 Turns 326
ALRIGHT TROOPS. THERES ALWAYS A GOODUN IN EVERY SHIT LITTER. THE ODDS ALWAYS CHANGE WHEN PUPS ARE OFF DECENT STOCK BUT THATS NEVER A GUARENTEE. SEEN SOME WRIGHT FXXXED UP STUFF OFF GOOD STUFF. BREED YOUR OWN THEN YOU NO WHAT YOUR DEALING WITH. Ideation 8,216
As 3turns said, it's a game of percentages. A well bred litter should have a higher percentage of pups that will make good dogs, than a litter bred off to shit dogs. But two very good parents can produce shit pups, sometimes an entire litter. The blood just doesnt marry right. And two shit dogs can throw good pups, even a good number, perhaps throwing back to previous dogs in the line that were good. Genetics are a funny thing. BUT. It's logical to try to stack the odds in your favour by both getting a well bred pup and putting a lot of time into training it. Also it's interesting that some well bred dogs of a certain type are 'too much' dog for some people and become a fecking liability or a nutter without the right kind of experianced handling. Just my thoughts. 4 Quote Link to post
TROY_BOY 62
both!!! cant win the derby with a donkey no matter how much time/ training Quote Link to post
paulus 26
The spanner in the works comes when you realize some bitches that are not necessarily the best often tend to throw the greatest percentage of good dogs, more so if the bitch is a first cross and put to a good dog Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
the more time, effort, practise and training that you put into a dog the better it will be no matter how its bred...........if you dont put the effort into a well bred pup with lots of potential it'll never be owt..........but if you put lots of effort into a lesser bred pup it'll do you proud 1 Quote Link to post

However just like you said, you try to stack the odds in you favour by getting something which is bred right. Edited May 17, 2013 by Bossie Quote Link to post
Carraghs Gem 1,675
As the saying goes a donkey never won the grand national... I agree with everything ideation has said A question though... The highly bred dogs you mentioned.. Are they coursing hounds or specialist fox dogs or another type? Quote Link to post
Desmond 480
I think you stand a far less chance of failure if you start with a good foundation[genetics],rearing a pup from proven stock from proven bloodlines gives me more confidence that he or she will be up to the job.I have never bred a litter and would only do so if I had a really good bitch,id rather buy a pup in than be kennel blind.A good dog man still plays his part mind but even he would struggle to make a silk purse out of a pigs ear 2 Quote Link to post
