What Age Does A Coursing Pup Stop Being A Pup.

Recommended Posts

to me age isnt an issue its the number of seasons the dog as seen , 1st season learning , 2nd season testing the dog to see if its going to make the grade

depends on the time of year they born as well, take season just gone, would not have liked to enter young dogs to some of the hares thats been about, ya gotta give em a couple of seasons maybe three unless they proepr gash, some just gunna be late starters same in all sports

A;RIGHT MATE.

6/7MTHS OLD CATCHING LAMPED RABBITS.

7/10MTHS CATCHING FLUSHED RABBITS WITH AN ODD SLIP AT A HARE JUST TOO GIVE IT A LOOK.

IVE HAD 10 MTH OLD PUPS CATCH DAYTIME HARES .

1YR TO 18MTHS THEY SHOULD BE GIVING A FAIR ACCOUNT OF THEMSELVES AFTER A SINGLE HANDED CHASE.

BY THE TIME THERE 2 IF THEY ARNT DOING IT THEYRE GONE.

WHEN MY PUP GETS 3 CONSISTANT KILLS IT BECOMES A LURCHER REGARDLESS OF AGE.

dont know about other coursing bred hounds but i considered my lad a pup until he was about 18mths... he was still very puppyish until then, now i will spend the next few months focusing on improving his obedience as whilst hes ok hes not up to the standard i like

Not into coursing never had a heavy saluki influenced dog but every individual dog is different, you can tell or should be able to tell when a pups of mature mind, I'd still class a young dog of 2 to be puppyish and learning its game although it might be of mature mind it's still only young, and its down to the man who works it to know his dog, should really be out its shell and doing things proper by the time it's coming 3 if its had enough work and brought on correct, sometimes good things come to those that wait, lot of lads seem to be in too much of a rush to see what a dogs like.

All dogs are different mine has caught a few now but he is still very puppyish especially round the mrs. When she takes him out with her bull terrier she says all he does is f**k about but when hes out with my other dogs he is abit more switched on. But i think by 2 if they arnt doing the job consistently and i dont mean killing the odd one or 2 i mean consistently killing then they wont ever make the grade imo.

As already said mate all dogs are different, i've had a 3/4 bred collie grey who was catching lamped rabbits at 8month odd but my current pup a deer x grey bitch (now 8month) is still very very puppyish and think she wil take another couple of months before shes getting lampers
