Spearfishing & Freediving

I've been doing this for a few years now and really enjoy it... good for the fitness with an added bonus of tagging your dinner Any of the lads on here get out with a speargun and if so what to you get. I mailnly go out looking for Bass but also get a few John Dory and Mullet as well as small pollock and whiting.

Yes LY, I have done a bit, used to play Octopush an a few lads who play got me into it, some are very keen. Pollock an whiting are all I've had over here. Try to get some in every holiday abroad, Greece an Turkey were good, with the locals offering to buy the fish, Spain, Portugal and Mexico which was nuts...Barracuda was the main catch, I shit first time in !!! Goin back next month, try an get some pics.

there is a few lads round my way do it..they get bass mainly..they come back with lobsters and eater crabs aswell

Its great fun but you've got to be a bit careful on the tides... i went out at Lee bay near the Bristol Channel and nearly got whipped off round the point and out to sea Going down to Portland again at the weekend to give tha bass a hard time. Went week before last but the viz was only anout 4 mtr's. Got a nice Grey Mullet last weekend off Brighton beach.. got a few weird looks mind you

I used to spear fish a lot, but have sold the spear guns and got an under water camera instead.

Scuba 1 what underwater camera have you got?I'm looking for one not too expensive for a wedding/holiday in a few weeks and since i do a bit of snorkelling i decided to try and get something i can use in the water,depth is not critical as i won't be diving too deep,could you recommend one ,all the best,

aldi do cheap cam's that can go to about 20metres or so should do the trick for you or just call to large dive shop should have something.

i used to dive for 12 years started when i was 18. miss it loads..............

I use an old Olympus W-5060 in a PT housing from Olympus as well. But these days, all major companies that make cameras also have under water housings on offer. Its just a matter of pays your money and take your choice. A mateof mine just got a Olympus SP 350 ans I must say, it is a nice and small camera in its housing, takes RAW file pictures as well and that is important for me as getting the colour back is so much easier in RAW format. I think the SP 350 makes a great camera to take with you as it is nice and compact ( even in its housing ) you can use all the functions of the camera while it is in the housing as well and so it is great to take along to the beack as well and if you buy it online, it is not going to break the bank either. www.camerasunderwater.co.uk

can i ask what is the laws about spearfishing in the uk? and what do you all need to know before you start?.As i am very keen to get into it.

hi there i spearfish in the summer, if you want information on spearfishing just tap in deeperblue ,its an excellent spearfishing site with some very knowledgable people on it,who will give you all the advise you will need ,but more importantly they will tell you how to do it safely .good luck greg

i have done it since i was a kid bak in gibraltar..alot clearer water out there..since i've been here (wales) only been once without a gun to check it out...looks nice, lots of lobsters and fish around..had to wait for three days of flat calm before i could see much though..

 

I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET A SPEARGUN FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS BUT CAN FIND NO SHOP CLOSE TO SWANSEA!! can anyone offer any guidance on this??

 

tis a great pursuit for anyone...but always SAFETY FIRST..NO FISH (OR LOBSTER) IS WORTH DYING FOR...learn your limits and stick to them, until you are so comfortable u can move on...it doesn' taker deep water for something to happen...but a calm mind and knowledge of what can go wrong and how to resolve it is priceless....i still consider myself a total amateur..as friends of mine back home do it professionally and they reach crazy depths, but have trained for yrs and risk their life every time.

 

still..everyone who likes the sea...i mean actually being in it! should give it a go!!
