Gitano 17
I had a very interesting convo with the mayoress of my village yesterday evening and she's basically given me the go-ahead to crack on with setting up a fitness convention here to give tourism the shot in the arm it desperately needs. Now I'm not completely clueless when it comes to this stuff as I trained to become a PT back in 2000, read a few strength and conditioning blogs and mix up my own training with everything from rope-climbing to sandbag stuff, kettlebells, barbells, gymnastic rings etc, however, my knowledge tends to be on the more extreme end of things (Ross Enamait-inspired stuff, basic powerlifting work etc) and although this will be somewhat relevant for what I'm about to set up, I obviously need to find out about some tamer stuff for beginners, women and lazy Spaniards What sort of stuff is popular these days where you are? Zumba, TRX, boot camps, MMA-inspired workouts, Tough Mudder???!!! Also, anybody involved in this sort of thing themselves? Any advice would be welcome. My initial idea is simply to set up various competitions throughout the weekend (all short duration as I don't want to be controlling marathon distance events and they're not exactly crowd pleasing anyway), lots of classes to show this part of Spain that looking after yourself can be fun and doesn't have to be restricted to running and going to the gym (although nowt wrong with that) and some demonstrations by gymnasts, martial artists and stuff like that. What would you do if tasked with something like this? Cheers all

von corris 0
Take a look at Crossfit, I've been doing it for a couple of months and am thoroughly enjoying it. The Crossfit Games looks like quite a spectacle- but then the Americans always put on a good show. I think the name is tademarked and franchised out, so probably expensive but it might give you some ideas.
Guest scramble
The "tamer stuff for beginners, women and the lazy" you want to look into pilates, core stability, balance etc. too many people go into fitness without building up a solid base to work from. If your core, glutes are weak you run the risk of injury. maybe look into lower limb, back rehabilitation methods as this will give you those basic strengthening exercises to form a qualitiy beginners class. fret78 87
Real easy games like balancing challenges when people don't realize they're training their cores, just having fun. I used to get families into press position ( either full or 3/4) in a circle and get them to ploay keepy uppy with a balloon. Like doing the plank but more fun. Sitting down onto low steps and standing up is great exercise and great way to spot posture problems, stick a minute time limit and you got an easy to control comp with a posture assessment in to boot. Gitano 17
Some good ideas on this thread, lads BORDERSCOT- Yeah mate, things are going spot on here...and even better now that I've got this thing to organise. Hunting and fitness are my two big passions and I'm in a good place for both. I'm going to get in touch with Rannoch at the weekend when I've structured my ideas a bit better so there's some definitive shape to 'em. The missus is constantly going on about the 100 rep challenge and, funnily enough, even mentioned it the other night to the mayoress who seemed very interested in the concept for all the inactive locals. Cheers. von corris-I hadn't checked Crossfit out for a while but sat through a few of their videos yesterday and part of what we'll be doing is low-tech circuity stuff. You know, loading beer kegs or sandbags on trucks, climbing ropes, sprints, loaded carries, car pushing...All pretty demanding but great fun. I've been given the go-ahead to sit watching fitness vids on YouTube for more ideas so if anyone's got some good vids (Parkour, gymnastic, strength feats, handbalancing, kettlebells...anything centred on physical movement is what we're after) post 'em up, please scramble-Definitely getting stuff like this into the programme. Mobility and balance is something I lend more time to for myself and I'll be incorpórating it into the convention/fair/exposition/whatever it turns out to be. I've got a mate here who's into Capoeira, climbing, surfing and all outdoors stuff and his wife is a Pilates/Yoga etc girl so we'll have that stuff covered! TOMO-Great info! I'll give your wife a shout over the weekend...you got me thinking about an emphasis on the young 'uns with your reference to Zumba for kids. Real problem here with obese nippers, so a large part of the weekend could be devoted to getting them doing fun stuff and introducing them to the novel idea that moving about in the great outdoors is, you know, an alright thing to do . Where abouts in Spain will you be, mate? j j m- Where are you? Get a few sessions with TOMO's wife, her website looks very good and you could lose that gut by summer fret78- That is also a very good idea, getting families working out together. A lot of folk would probably like to mix up all sorts of play and training with their families and that is something I'm going to start thinking about. Cheers! Good stuff everyone
Born Hunter 17,841
What about a bodyweight challenge for the fitter and more competitive people. 300 spartans/bodyweight 500 or a watered down version? Say squats, push ups, pull ups, crunches and jumping jacks?
