Trampled To Death ..........

Recommended Posts

A farmer, well, not really a farmer as such, puts cattle on the common land along the rivers round here. This is an official walking route: The Ouse Valley Way, complete with signs, turn styles etc. The main herd are shut away from the public, but there's always a couple of cows with calves on the foot path areas between river and lakes: long thin bits of ground not 20 yards wide: freaks me out a bit, BUT, these old cows are very steady and OK with dogs, to the extent that if one of the calves is lying down right in the middle of the path, and you only have a matter of yards in which to go round it, the mother will call the calf to her to get it out of the way. If I hadn't seen this myself I wouldn't have believed it.

I still don't trust them one inch mind, and my dogs are tight at heel when we go past, and my heart beats a bit faster: all ready to dive through the fence and into the lake if needs be  Always look behind me all the time as we move away from them too: never know if they're suddenly going to decide they hate dogs after all! I'd NEVER go into a field with a herd of cows and calves, not for any reason, ever. Just not worth the risk IMO.

one question y hunt it wit a dog? i know cows with young calfs are dangerous and bulls are a nighmare but cattle i ways get a stick and herd them like the farm would nice and calm and keep the dog away cause thats what draws them on you ! so sending a dog to do it is a little silly if you ask me,if farmers seen it i dont think they would have you on there land for long , get a stick and dont be afraid to use it dealt with a lot of live stock and the only thing i never go any where newar is a horse they are the worst thing in the world to deal with ! :hmm:

Seriously if I was you I would give the old bovines a wide berth 'cause if you think you can deal with a 'situation' with a stick mate good luck to you...if you've a big hefty cow beast with a calf at foot...or if the wind's spooked them...or dog's drawn them to you and they are getting a bit belligerent a stick will be as much good as the proverbial 'tits on a bull'...you may as well try and piss in its ear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck...

its a touchy subject and if you shoe them on by yourself or a dog and then they run through a gate , fence or hedge ............then on to a road and then they kill someone your in the shite.........i try to avoid them if i can but sometimes you cant ........you frighten cattle and you live with the consequences ,...........we have all done it but i learnt my lesson one night when we put a lamp on(no where close to the cattle but it was enough too spook them and they were running hard) and the herd ran through a gate on to the lane .......us thinking shite what if they go on to the main road ,....tried herding them back through the gate they went mental and just ran through fences to get back into the field............of course we made it as stock proof as we could and then got a very unhappy farm worker.........of course we told him they were already on the lane and we tried putting them back in............lol ..(he knew the crack)..........we couldnt leave them because if they had gone on to the main road in the village there would have been serious accident or deaths and i cant live with that..........

so anyway the problem is cattle are unpredictable and most will shoe away and the odd time a herd will go mad and run riot ,...........so if your thinking of moving on steers etc ,..........think where your too and exspect the worst scenario because sometimes it does happen ,...even when spooked just a little bit.......they go mad cow......

for your own safety you have to do whats right but just remember sometimes when you send them away and spook them they go in a big circle and the next time they come around( there not inquisitive)there running flat out lol ,..it can be a stampede ,........so get the fook out of the way........

i cant stand being in a field with cows im forever looking over my shoulder to see were they are but on hearing that news it just goes to show you should be wary of them,,and the bad thing is ive just been invited out with my pup and 3 other pups of the same litter to a wild cattle farm to give them a few runs on rabbits

My dogs have a healthy respect for large, hooved animals, as they are around my horses a lot. I wouldn't trust or expect them to do any form of work with cattle though, and avoid the beasts whenever possible. I have seen dogs work them perfectly safely though - and many years work as a vet nurse in a mixed practice, dairy and beef alike, the dogs are superb at what they do. It only takes 1 slip up though - as I discovered when me, the vet, and the farmer were most of the way through a C-Section on a young heifer ( she got raped by the neighbours Belgian Blue bull...) and the poor girl suddenly saw the calf, and freaked out. She left the pen through a 5 bar gate - which I wasn't quick enough to move out of the way from, and she went thru me, and the gate, in 2 strides. 2 broken shoulder blades later, I had a new found respect for the speed they can move at.

when the local beef farmer checks the hedges for new born calves he always places his tractor between him and the field with the cows in. and this bloke has been a farmer all his life, Dairy cattle are not in the same league as there well used to being moved from place to another. If your in a field with cows be mindful they can and do kill on a regular basis.

if your hunting some land where there is cattle and you set your dog to chase them on and the farmer sees it I doubt you will have permission there much longer. especially if they are in-calf because it can lead them to aborting and shit will hit the fan then

If I have to go in a field with cattle, I always make sure i'm close enough to an exit so that I could get out in time if I had to and am mindful of trees etc that I could use to "break there charge". As a child my nan used to lead bulls through her village but she never trusted cows. As a young man, I got in the way of some worried sheep and they knocked me flying, am over 6' tall and weighed a fit 15 stone at the time so cows are gonna trample me into the ground. I'm not taking chances with that
