Guest whitser
my advice is read as much as you can on the subject and get the right gear. goood collar and box. drain spade, digging shovel and a ferreting bar or t-bar. you really want to try and make contact with some terrier lads near you and go out with them and watch and learn. if you cant get in touch with any one just learn as you go. best of luck. m.r1 7
Good luck, if you cannot afford the loactor, get a bar, for example a crow bar and use it as a delving rod, you can then sink holes to help aid your listening techniques, be careful though, dont want to hit your terrier! BredtoHunt 8
curtislj-do you mean this ? : DEBEN MK1 FERRET FINDER PLUS ONE COLLARif so i will try it out for a start. >>I wouldnt recommend sand dunes at all -this is only common sense that sand isnt that well strong an could collapse very easy. The dunes here are held together with maram grass roots which go way down and are solid- its not loose sand, theres dirt mixed in as well-lots of foxes in the dunes because of all the rabbits. The earth that my dog went to ground on originally would be almost impossible to dig to so ill keep him out of it. >>A strong lurcher can kill a fox but im not sure of the law's over there here in the uk its banned... As far as i know here in the south(r.i.) as long as its not a badger your after you can do what you want. im dont know for sure though anyone hear differently? I'd really like a lurcher or maybe a deer hound eventually but i want to learn to hunt the terrier well first. Also im reluctant to get a lurcher because i dont know anything about them and wouldnt know what to look for. Its a big commitment to get a new dog. But i would prefer this method to dispatch the quarry. I will get a collar and might be able to find someone to go out with. Most people around here stopped hunting with terriers, some sheep farmers blind the fox with a light at night and shoot them. There is a gun club here but they do the same-just blind and shoot. I think a lot of foxes here are taken like this. -thanks kevin Kevin If your going with Deben get the LRT not the Mark1. Ken Quote Link to post
magus69 0
If your dog is constantly baying this usually indicates that he has got Charlie holed up and you need to dig. Remember when digging that the signal is being eminated from your dogs neck so please please keep checking the depth with the locator. when you reach the dog remember that he's going to be fired up like you've never seen him before don't just make a grab let him know it's you before you oik him out. you have then got a fox who is fighting for it's life to contend with DO either have a gun or someone with you with a gun to SAFELY despatch the fox remembering you are going to have a totally fired up dog and you're going to be in the hole (I've heard of people who have had legs/feet peppered, and dogs shot when they've managed to free themselves to re-enter). As said before DO take the time and effort to find people with plenty of experience to show you the ropes they usually become friends for life. DON'T free the fox to allow your dog to chase it down cos it won't catch it (unless it can transform into a running dog). The Terriers job is to bolt the fox or hold it if it holes up till you can dig to it hence Earth dog not running dog. Also make sure you have the necessary finances to cover the vet bills you're going to incur when the dog recieves injuries which will be inevitable. Hope this has helped Mike... Quote Link to post
